Device-to-device (D2D) communications are becomingpopular and promising owing to the proliferation of the Internet ofThings (IoT). Since existing D2D technologies only consider D2Dcommunications on either licensed band or unlicensed band, thispaper proposes a traffic steering scheme that jointly exploits threetypes of transmission links: Cellular links, D2D links on licensedband, and D2D links on unlicensed band. Our scheme aims to significantlyincrease system capacity while ensuring QoS for eachuser. For doing this, we define admission control for each type oftransmission links. The admission control further considers coexistenceof D2D traffic with WLAN traffic. This paper first presentsan analytical framework and models the proposed traffic steeringscheme using Markov analysis. We verify the analytical frameworkthrough simulation. Our research confirms that the proposedscheme using the licensed and unlicensed bands outperforms theconventional scheme that uses the licensed band only.
