The BeopJeong Monastery Anti-Japanese Uprising refers to a revolt against the Japanese occupation of Korea based in the BeopJeong Monastery, which was built by Bongnyeogwan in September 1918 for such a purpose. The Adjudication on Jung Kuyong by the Retrial Court in Taegu is the only official court document that contains information on a series of events that had led up to the revolt. According to this document, the uprising was planned and organized in full-scale in BeopJeong Monastery of Jeju from the sixth lunar month of 1918 under the leadership of Abbot Kim nyeonil. It was an armed resistance in which roughly 400 people participated. They first prayed in the monastery in the dark hours of the third day of the ninth lunar month, held a ceremony for the charge, left the monastery, walked about twenty kilometers through Sang-dong, Yeongnam-ni, Hogun-ni, Seoho-ri, Kangjŏng- ni, Tosun-ni, and Hawon-ni until they reached the police station in Chungmun-ni. BeopJeong Monastery was a gathering place for the key anti-Japanese activists, serving as the headquarter of their resistance movement. The goal of their uprising was to “return to the time of Korean sovereignty,” which had been forcefully taken away by Japan. Therefore, the founder of a particular religion or the faith of his followers was never the main factor of the uprising. In this article, I present for the first time the Jung Kuyong Adjudication Document which was newly translated and triangulated, along with nine additional documents on Jung’s trial in the hopes of assisting future research on the BeopJeong Monastery Anti-Japanese Uprising.
