This paper is to examine what is meant by young people’s geographies, looking at the emergence of children’s geographies as a research field within academic research arena after the 1990s, and then review a series of work that the geographical association has related the findings to curriculum in geography. The geographers researching children’s geographies assume that children and young people experience places and spaces in different ways to adults, and examine how children and young people experience places and construct their own sense of place, and perform multiple identities at different times and in different spaces. And geographers became increasingly aware of doing research with and for children, rather than doing research on or to children. This linkage is to work with students using their personal geographies, to ensure that the geography curriculum is both meaningful to them and relevant to their everyday lives. The Young People’s Geographies(YPG) project began in 2006 involving seven secondary schools. The aim of the project is to explore ways in which professors, teachers and students can work collaboratively to develop approaches to curriculum development and classroom practice that explicitly start from the lived geographies of the students. The project emphasizes that students bring with them to school important ideas, experiences, interests and concerns that should provide both a focus and the raw material for their geographical learning. Using alternative approaches that draw on young people’s own experiences and concerns to teach school geography helps make the subject more relevant and engaging.
