국제 바칼로레아(IB) 미술교육이 학생들에게 미치는 영향 = Exploring the Impact of the International Baccalaureate Visual Arts on Students

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우리나라의 교육 환경은 글로벌 변화에 따라 패러다임의 변화를 겪고 있으며, 전통적인 교육적 접근 방식에 대한 재검토 또한 이루어지고 있다. 이러한 역동적인 상황에서 국제 교육 프로그램, 특히 국제 바칼로레아(IB : International Baccalaureate)는 한국의 교육 이해관계자들 사이에서 관심의 대상으로 부상하고 있다. 세계 시민 의식과 비판적 사고력을 키우는 데 중점을 두는 IB는 한국 교육 시스템의 광범위한 목표와 일치하여 학생과 학부모 사이에서 점점 더 인기를 얻고 있으며, 공교육에의 도입까지 논의되고 있다. 그러나 우리나라에 IB 프로그램을 도입하게 될 경우, 학생들에게 어떤 영향을 미칠 지에 대해 문화적 고려를 포함한 연구가 진행된 바가 없다. 그러므로 미술 교육의 관점에서 바라보았을 때, IB 미술교육이 프로그램을 성공적으로 이수하고 예술 분야에서 경력을 쌓기 시작한 개인에게 미치는 영향을 조사하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구는 이러한 의문점을 해결하고, 잠재적인 도전과제를 고려하면서 IB 미술교육이 한국 상황에 어떻게 효과적으로 부합할 수 있는지 이해할 필요성을 강조한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 IB 미술교육이 프로그램을 성공적으로 이수하고 한국에서 미술 관련 직업에 진출한 개인에게 미친 실질적 영향에 대해 탐구한다. 연구에서는 두 가지 목표를 달성한다. 첫째는 IB 미술교육이 학생들에게 미치는 영향을 종합적으로 평가하고, 한국 교육 상황과의 연계성을 탐구하며, 학생들의 진로 선택에 미치는 잠재적 효과를 확인하는 것이다. 둘째로, 본 연구는 IB 미술교육과 한국 교육 시스템 간의 교차점을 면밀히 파악하여 이 커리큘럼이 국내 교육 환경을 어떻게 재편할 수 있는지 확인해 본다. 이러한 목표를 달성하기 위해 종합적인 질적 사례 연구 분석이 수행되었다. 질적 사례 연구를 위해 연구의 목표에 부합하는 인터뷰 대상자 4명을 선정하였다. 각 인터뷰 대상자는 IB 미술교육을 이수하고 미술대학에서 고등 교육을 받았으며 한국에서 다양한 미술 관련 직업에 적극적으로 참여하고 있다는 기준을 충족했다. 심층 인터뷰는 IB 미술교육에 대한 경험, 학업 및 직업 여정, 커리큘럼이 삶에 미친 영향 등 다양한 주제에 걸쳐 진행되었다. 연구 결과, IB 미술교육이 학생 개인에게 다방면으로 미치는 영향이 밝혀졌다. 첫째, 진로 선택에 미친 영향을 조사한 결과, 인터뷰 대상들은 IB 미술교육을 통해 미술에 대한 흥미와 역량을 기를 수 있었으며, 이러한 경험을 토대로 자신의 진로를 결정하는 데 도움이 되었다는 것을 확인해 볼 수 있었다. 특히, 미술을 대학 전공으로 선택한 학생들은 IB 미술교육이 대학 진학에 필요한 기본 지식과 기술을 습득하는 데에, 그리고 대학 재학 중 미술 전공 수업을 수행하는 데에 도움이 되었다는 사실을 확인해 볼 수 있었다. 둘째, 창의력과 사고력에 미친 영향을 조사한 결과, 인터뷰 대상들은 IB 미술교육을 통해 자유롭게 자신의 생각을 표현하고, 다양한 관점에서 세상을 바라볼 수 있게 되었다고 언급하였다. 이러한 경험은 학생들의 창의력과 사고력을 증진시키는 데 기여하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 자기주도적 학습 능력에 미친 영향을 조사한 결과, 인터뷰 대상들은 IB 미술교육을 통해 스스로 문제를 해결하고, 목표를 설정하고 달성하는 방법을 배울 수 있었다. 이러한 경험은 학생들의 자기주도적 학습 능력을 향상시키는 데 기여하는 것으로 나타났다. 연구 결과에 대한 해석을 통해 본 연구는 IB 미술교육이 학 생 개인에게 진로 선택에 미치는 영향, 대학교 미술전공에 미치는 영향, 한국의 미술분야 직무에 미치는 영향을 분석해보았다. 또한, 학생들이 IB 미술교육을 통해 갖출 수 있는 덕목, IB 미술교육이 작업과정의 기록을 중요시하는 것에 대한 의미, IB 미술교육의 국내 도입에 필요한 노력에 대해서도 고찰하였다. 그리고, 연구결과를 선행연구와 결부시켜 해석한 부정적인 영향 또한 제시함으로써 연구의 의미를 포괄적으로 제시하였다. 한편, IB 미술교육과 우리나라 미술 교육의 교차점을 확인해본 결과, IB 미술교육이 우리나라의 문화적 특징과 괴리가 존재한다는 점을 확인해보았다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 우리나라에서 IB 미술교육의 도입 혹은 일부 적용을 위한 실질적인 제언 또한 제공한다. 제언에는 IB 미술교육에 종사하는 교사에 대한 연수를 의무화하고, IB 미술교육의 기본 특성을 유지하면서 국내 상황에 맞게 커리큘럼을 조정하는 방안이 포함되어 있다. 여기에는 학생들의 자율적인 학습 환경 지원 강화, 최종 결과물의 양과 질을 모두 포괄하는 평가 기준 도입, 입시제도에 대한 고찰 등이 포함된다. 본 연구의 의미는 IB 미술교육이 한국 학생들에게 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보고, 한국적 맥락에서 커리큘럼의 효과를 높이기 위한 제언을 제시할 수 있다는 데 있다. 본 연구는 국제적 교육 트렌드와 국내의 문화적 맥락을 조화시킴으로써 국제 교육 프로그램과 한국 교육 환경 간의 조화로운 관계를 촉진할 것이다. 결론적으로, 본 연구는 IB 미술교육이 학생들에게 미치는 실질적인 영향을 우리나라의 입장에서 분석하였으며, 연구에서 제시하는 심층적인 질적 사례 연구와 이에 대한 해석은 국제적 교육 트렌드에 대한 문화적 맥락에서의 이해도를 증진시키는 데에 기여할 것이다.

The education landscape in South Korea is undergoing a paradigm shift in response to global changes and a rethinking of traditional educational approaches. In this dynamic context, international education programs, particularly the International Baccalaureate (IB), are emerging as a focus of interest among education stakeholders in South Korea. With its focus on fostering global citizenship and critical thinking skills, the IB is becoming increasingly popular among students and parents, aligning with the broader goals of the South Korean education system, and has even been discussed for introduction into public education. However, no research has been conducted on how the IB program would affect students in Korea, including cultural considerations. Therefore, from an art education perspective, it is important to examine the impact of IB art education on individuals who successfully complete the program and begin to pursue careers in the arts. This study addresses these questions and highlights the need to understand how IB art education can be effectively adapted to the Korean context while considering potential challenges. This paper explores the practical impact of international IB art education on individuals who successfully complete the program and enter art-related careers in South Korea. The study accomplishes two important goals. The first is to comprehensively evaluate the impact of IB art education on students, explore the connections to the Korean educational context, and identify potential effects on students' career choices. Second, the study seeks to better understand the intersections between IB art education and the Korean education system to determine how this curriculum can reshape the Korean educational landscape. To accomplish these goals, a comprehensive qualitative case study analysis was conducted. For the qualitative case study, four interviewees were selected to meet the research objectives. Each interviewee met the criteria of having completed IB Visual Arts, having pursued higher education at an art college, and being actively involved in a variety of art-related professions in South Korea. The in-depth interviews covered a range of topics, including their experiences with IB art education, their academic and professional journeys, and the impact of the curriculum on their lives. The study found that IB art education has a multifaceted impact on students. First, in terms of career choices, interviewees confirmed that their IB art education helped them to develop their interest and competence in art, and that these experiences helped them to decide on their career paths. In particular, students who chose art as their university major confirmed that their IB art education helped them to acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed to enter university and to carry out their art studies while at university. Second, in terms of creativity and thinking skills, interviewees mentioned that their IB art education enabled them to express their ideas freely and to see the world from different perspectives. These experiences contribute to enhancing students' creativity and thinking skills. Third, when examining the impact on self-directed learning, interviewees reported that IB art education taught them how to problem-solve, set and achieve goals independently. These experiences were found to contribute to improving students' self-directed learning abilities. Through the interpretation of the findings, this paper analyzes the impact of IB art education on individual students' career choices, the impact on university art majors, and the impact on jobs in the art field in Korea. It also analyzes the qualities that students can acquire through IB art, the implications of IB art education's emphasis on documentation of the work process, and the efforts needed to introduce IB art education in Korea. In addition, the implications of the study are presented in a comprehensive manner by presenting the negative effects of the results in relation to previous studies. On the other hand, the intersection of IB art education and Korean art education was examined, and it was found that there is a gap between IB art education and Korean cultural characteristics. Accordingly, this study provides practical recommendations for the introduction or partial application of IB art education in Korea. The recommendations include mandatory training for teachers involved in IB art education and adapting the curriculum to local conditions while maintaining the basic characteristics of IB art education. These include strengthening support for students' autonomous learning environments, introducing assessment criteria that encompass both the quantity and quality of final products, and an examination of the admissions system. The significance of this study is that it provides insight into the impact of IB art education on Korean students and offers actionable suggestions for enhancing the effectiveness of the curriculum in the Korean context. By reconciling global education trends with local cultural nuances, this study will meet the diverse needs of students and promote a harmonious relationship between international education programs and the Korean educational environment. In conclusion, this paper analyzes the practical impact of IB art education on students from a Korean perspective. The in-depth qualitative case study and interpretation presented in this study will contribute to promoting a harmonious relationship between global education trends and local cultural context.
