영화 <내 친구의 집은 어디인가?>에 대한 문학적 접근과 영시강의에서의 활용 = A Literary Approach to the Movie Where is the Friend’s House? and Its Use in Teaching English Poetry

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main purpose of this study is to propose and exemplify a method of using Where is the Friend’s House?, a movie created by the Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, in teaching English poetry. In this study, which is basically a case study, some of the technical and formal aspects of this movie are first examined from the literary point of view. Symbols, images, character rendering, formal repetition, and irony are here brought into focus. This is followed by a thematic analysis of the movie, upon which Section Ⅳ, based on the present writer's experience in teaching English poetry, relies heavily. In the classroom, whenever considered relevant and useful, some of the poetic aspects of this movie may be referred to, or even made extensive use of to help the students understand and appreciate the artistic significance of each individual poem or the general poetic tendency of a poet. Due to space limitations, the exemplification here is shown only of teaching William Blake’s poetry, though poets like William Wordsworth and T. S. Eliot are briefly mentioned.
Special attention is paid to Blake’s complex symbolic system and his view of the universe drawn upon it. Without this prerequisite information, proper understanding of his Songs of Innocence and of Experience Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul is almost impossible. To exemplify this method, “The Holy Thursday” in the Songs of Innocence is selected, and read in comparison with the movie and some other songs in the book. Then the concepts in Blake’s view of the universe and his symbolic system are briefly explained to the students to help them put everything in order. This method has proven quite effective not only for helping the students read some of the poems of such poets as Wordsworth, Eliot, and Blake, but for making the English poetry course approachable even to the English-shy students.
