A Postmodern Interpretation on
the Novel The Hours and the Film The Hours
This paper aims to develop a postmodern interpretation on Michael Cunningham’s novel The Hours and Stephen Daldry’s film The Hours in terms of the concepts of postmodernism including “text,” “transtextuality,” “metafiction,” “hypertext,” “hypotext” and “death of author.” The results of the investigation are summarized as the following. First of all, the novel The Hours is a kind of metafiction which reveals a characteristic of postmodernism, that is, “a life imitates an art (novel)” whereas the novel The Hours is also involved in the idea of the symbolic “death of author.” The paper also argues that the film The Hours is a hypertext derived from the hypotext novel The Hours. Thus, the difference between the novel and the film is more important than the similarity between them. Finally, it is claimed that the film reveals a characteristic of postmodernism, that is, “the contemporaneity of the noncontemporaneous.” The film stands out not only for the idea of the symbolic “death of author” but also for a postmodern thematic, that is, “lesbianism” as a kind of subculture, when compared with the novel.
