The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of Jingdian Shiwen (經典釋文), a yinyishu (音義書) compiled by Lu Deming (陸德明) in terms of philology, linguistics, and history of classical scholarship, utilising digital humanities methodologies. Although Jingdian Shiwen is a watershed work in the history of Chinese scholarship, encompassing characteristics of both Classical Studies (jingxue, 經學) and Philology (xiaoxue, 小學), existing research has been biased towards specific fields such as phonology, or was limited to describing Lu Deming’s theoretical concepts. Therefore, this study empirically analyses Lu Deming’s scholarly practices that penetrate the entire text by integrating digital humanities methodologies with traditional philological research methods.
The main contents of this study are as follows.
Chapter 2 investigates the bibliographical aspects of Jingdian Shiwen. First, by reconstructing Lu Deming’s biography, this study contradicts the conventional belief that Jingdian Shiwen was completed in 583 C.E., and argues that its completion lies between 607 and 618. Subsequently, through an analysis of editions and format, it is revealed that the division into 30 volumes was not merely for the sake of matching a round number, but the result of intentional editing considering the completeness of the classics. In addition, key terminologies of Jingdian Shiwen were extracted and explained using nGram analysis.
Chapter 3 analyses the linguistic characteristics of Jingdian Shiwen based on the text database. First, it is pointed out that Lu Deming’s annotations on sound and meaning function not only to determine pronunciation but also to specify character forms. Furthermore, by implementing the fanqie connection method (xilian, 系聯) through Network Analysis to re-examine the phonological system, this study raises the possibility that Jingdian Shiwen reflects a standard sound or literary reading system influenced by the Wu (吳) dialect. Also, through the analysis of high-frequency polyphones (duoyinzi, 多音字), it is demonstrated that Lu Deming’s phonetic annotation was simultaneously a linguistic description and a hermeneutic act.
Chapter 4 discusses the characteristics of Jingdian Shiwen from the perspective of the history of scholarship. First, Lu Deming is re-evaluated as the “first historian of Classical Studies.” He systematically described the transmission process of the classics and the genealogy of academic schools by collecting fragmented historical materials. Moreover, the patterns in Lu Deming’s citation order are identified, and by analysing citation patterns centering on Shuowen Jiezi (說文解字), it is revealed that he utilised prior literature as both a standard for textual criticism and an authority for interpretation. Finally, through an exhaustive comparison with Zhu Xi’s (朱熹) Shi Jizhuan (詩集傳) and Lunyu Zhangju Jizhu (論語章句集注), it is quantitatively proven that Lu Deming’s phonetic annotations exerted a profound influence on later interpretations of the classics.
In conclusion, this study argues that, in Jingdian Shiwen, “determination of sound” was simultaneously “determination of meaning” and a “hermeneutic act.” This study expands the horizon of research on Jingdian Shiwen and provides an empirical foundation for future related studies by verifying how Lu Deming’s academic theories were practiced within the actual text.
