This study initiated from questioning ‘how we should understand the married couple’ instead of ‘what married couple is’ in Korea, where the divorce rate is extremely high. It is hermeneutically significant for married couples to understand each other rather than simply realizing the essence of married couples in family counseling. After Korean War(1950-1953), Korea achieved extremely rapid economic growth but on the other hand, it left a negative mark of shadow of family groups dissolving and scattering all over. This shadow ultimately caused critical situations such as domestic violence or child abuse. Therefore, this study prposes to focus on forming marital identity in family counseling not performing the roles or communication improvement of the married couple.
For this reason, this study shows the meaning of marital identity in family counseling by applying Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics approaches. And this study aims to explicate the improvement of weak marital identity by using active and voluntary playing. In addition, Winnicott’s playing theory is used to understand married couples’ transitional space relationship. These two hermeneutics theories contain essential characteristics of married couples’ lives. Gadamer claims about an existing method of pure self-expression, transformed into the formation, and continuity of meaning shows playing conceptions. Also, Winnicott talks about use of transitional object in transitional phenomena, creativity, and ability to use in object relation by showing characteristics of playing therapy. Therefore, theory of playing conceptions can be understood as a process of recreating marital identity in the inherent influence of conflict and crisis.
As a result, Gadamer’s directing point of ‘open posture’, ‘remaining’, and ‘reframing’ leads to building stronger marital identity. In order to help married couples in strengthening marital identity, counselor should know that he or she cannot fully understand and sympathize all the married couples and must stay outside of standardized family stereotype. And counselor should help married couples to communicate like they are interpreting to each other.
In conclusion, this study discovered that human reflections are more important than improving the techniques of counseling and removing the symptoms. And also, this study suggests for counselors to use Gadamer`s hermeneutical marriage counseling model in order to have a new understanding of marital identity in Korean society.
