this paper analyses the hollowing-out effect of manufacturing industry following the rapid increase of Korean investment in China. The analysis shows some implications that we must admit that hollowing-out of manufacturing sectors is an unavoidable process on the road to economic maturity and outward investment by Korean firms and their relocation of production facilities overseas should be viewed positively and made as simple as possible. At the same time, we must push forward more aggressively in upgrading the industrial structure and improving corporate competitiveness. We have to revitalize the manufacturing industry with a new focus on high value-added, technology-intensive manufacturing sectors and also promote deindustrialization or knowledge-based service industries, such as financial, logical, cultural and healthcare industries. Finally, we need to reform the high costs and low efficiency that now characterizes Korean society to prepare for hollow-out Korean manufacturing industires.
