Lichen striatus(LS) is an uncommon linear eruption characterized by discrete, flat-topped lichenoid papules resembling lichen planus(LP). The histologic picture of LS is nonspecific and shows so many remarkable variations that it can be easily misinterpreted. In the present study, we have evaluated the immunohistochemical aspects of 10 cases of LS and 4 cases of LP using paraffin-embedded section to evaluate if they are useful when differentiating LS from LP is difficult in clinically and histopathologically.
There was no significant difference of CD4 and CD8 expression between LS and LP. In all cases focal reactivity for HLA-DR was confined to keratinocytes adjacent to the HLA-DR+ dermal lymphoid infiltrates except one case of LS in which HLA-DR was expressed on the surface of keratinocytes in diffuse pattern.
There was a marked increase in S-100^- epidermal Langerhans cell in LP rather than LS.
