욕망을 가진 타자들의 구성과 백인 남성 가부장제의 안정화 : 영화 「치트」를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1910년대 미국의 영화 산업은 탈계급적 정서인 인종주의를 영화 소재로 즐겨 이용하고 있었다. 1915년 영화 「치트」는 그 대표적인 사례라 할 수 있다. 이 영화에서 드러나듯이 백인 주류 사회가 가진 아시아인의 전형성은 진화론에 의거한 중층적 인종위계 속의 중간자적 존재이자 반문명적 유색인종이라는 양면적인 것이었다. 그러나 동시에 이 영화는 인종적 전형성이 한 인종의 인종 위계 속에서의 지위의 유동성을 반영하면서 변화한다는 것을 잘 보여 주고 있다. 그러나 「치트」는 당대 미국의 가장 기본적인 사회 모순이 인종 관계임을 보여주는 사례는 아니다. 영화 속에는 계급 갈등, 젠더 갈등, 중간계급 내부의 문화적 갈등이 중첩되어 나타나기 때문이다. 나아가 「치트」는 인종 위계와 젠더 위계가 상호영향을 미치며 서로를 강화하는 것을 잘 보여 준다. 「치트」에서 드러나는 인종 간 성 경계에 대한 백인 가부장 사회의 집착은 백인여성을 지배 인종의 일원으로 격상시키기도 하지만, 동시에 백인 여성을 열등한 사회적 지위에 위치시키기도 하는 양면적 결과를 낳는다. 특히 백인 여성의 사회적 지위가 가지는 모순성은 백인 여성이 성적 경계를 넘는 것이 철저히 금지된 것과 달리, 백인 여성에 대한 성적 위협으로 규정되면서 부분적인 남성성을 획득한 유색인종 남성이 지속적으로 성 경계를 교란하고 이를 넘어설 수 있는 가부장 사회의 특권 일부를 향유하기도 한다는 점에서 잘 드러나게 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

During the 1910s, the American film industry increasingly utilized racism for economic purposes. This film -making which had been criticized by middleclass people for fostering class feelings became a method to facilitate class reconciliation among whites. Especially, the 1915 film, The Cheat, reflected on the disappearance of the image of Asians as a middling sort in the evolutionary ladder of civilization and integrated Asian men who were stigmatized as rapists into the racial hierarchies based on a black/white binary. However, The Cheat did not suggest that racial relations were the most basic of social hierarchies at that time. The Cheat reflected class differences, the toppling gender order, and even the cultural struggle within the middle classes. Furthermore, it demonstrated that racial hierarchies and gender hierarchies strengthened each other. Racial hierarchies policed the sexual boundaries and enforced the view that white women need to internalize purity and domesticity for their own safety from racial Other’s sexual threats and to accept traditional gender roles to regain their whiteness. However, sexual boundaries established between the races also complicated the white woman’s social position. White men harshly punished white women for violating these sexual boundaries, while sometimes they letting their own masculinized racial counterparts cross the same boundaries partly to share a certain level of patriarchal power.
