This study is made for the analysis or Hangul novels, targeting on how it has been shaped and developed. As one of effective routes, it is presented by using translation and revision of novels from the Chinese version to the Hangul. The main renter stream of patterns are as follows.
Among the historical novels of the late Chosun Dynasty, the comparative study was made between the original Chinese versions and the Hangul versions : "Choi Chuk Jun", "Yun Ji Kyung Jun", "Kim Young Chul Jun", "Park Tae Bo Jun".
When the Hangul novels is searched thru, based on the above-mentioned works, we can find out some development trends : the direct translation in general, the diversified style of translator, the active remodeling of the Chinese version on both the main subject and a story development.
For the direct translation from the Chinese version to the Hangul, "Choi Chuk Jun" comes out as the representative case, showing from the difference of paragraph nit. It is distinctive as follows. First, it is mostly replaced by the Hangul expression that is much natural at most pus of the novels. Secondly, it shows the intended omission and simplification. Thirdly, the phenomenon of the detailed illustration is also found to enforce the narrative character. By introducing these methods, we can take a understanding that translators exercised efforts to meet the demands of Hangul users with more natural expression of sentence.
"Yun Ji Kyong Jun" is one of outstanding versions, holding various type of translation patterns. The active variation comes out at each unit of both sentence and paragraph. Tt is distinctive in its diversification in major three catagories :
First, few copies remains as direct translation at Hangul copies from the original Chinese version, with extreme variation of sentence unit in most cases and free style of Hangul expression and lots of suitable mixture of oral and written expression.
Secondly, it is remarkable for the trend of the detailed explanation among the sentence variation. Thirdly, the simplification and omission is found out.
As the third representative work of active translation on the narrative development and the subject, there are "Park Tae Bo Jun" and "Kim Young Chu Jun". These translations have extensive variation on the aspect of the development of narration. It effected so much as to show wide difference on the subject between the Hangul version and the Chinese version.
When the revised translation of the Chinese version has started around 15th to 16th centuries, the gamut of readers also has been expanded. It also became the knowledgeable spur for Hangul version writers on the astute attitude for questionable approach and the creation methods. In addition, the crossway has arisen between the novels written in Chinese and those in Hangul so that it might have worked as the stimulation power engine on the development of novel history. Especially, two aspects require to be evaluated.
It is possible to understand the independent realm and distinction of Hangul-translated novels, apart from the influence of the original version thru the translation and revision. At first, it shows the natural expression of the Hangul on the unit of sentence and word, although it is based on the direct and facial translation. It generally has turned out to be in the whole paragraphs, covering more and more the importance and the number of appearance of variation. With the continued variation, both name and character of persons has been changed, finally influencing the general atmosphere of the works, together with the changes of subject.
Secondly, we can have better understanding of the formation and development of the Hangul novels thru the revision and re-creation of the original Chinese version. Let's catagorize in major three patterns : the first pattern has experienced with the inactive approach by direct translation, starting from the subordinate and vertical relationship. the second has been transformed by recognizing its own expression as the Hangul version novel. The third has come to be independent as the established Hangul novel.
