The purpose of this paper is to explore the meaning of incest in Paradise Lost in the context of Milton and Sex. In Paradise Lost, Milton dramatizes the incestuous relationship of Satan and Sin. Sexual and alimentary appetites are inclined to be prohibited similarly in many cultures. For Sigmund Freud and Levi-Strauss, incest taboo came into being as a form of social control and it is central to exogamy and to totemic kinship systems. Jacques Derrida couples language to the incest taboo, describing both as parallel constituents of social consciousness. The moment of the prohibition of incest thus presupposes and comprises the extension of language as a generalized social construct. And the respect for the incest taboo insures the continuity of culture.
Agreeing on Freud's, Levi-Strauss's, and Derrida's views of incest, I would examine the significance of incest taboo in this epic and the fact that incestuous desire is closely associated with the desire for knowledge and political power. And I will compare the relations of infernal trinity with those of Adam and Eve, and Holy Trinity. The relationship between Satan, Sin, and Death is the negative parody of both the Trinity and human domestic relationships. The scene in which Satan meets his daughter and son deliberately distinguishes the chaotic, absolute, incestuous relations of Milton's Hell from the ordered, nonincestuous, democratic relation of Milton's Heaven.
