박화성의 소설에 내포된 근대성과 전근대성 -『백화』를 중심으로 = Modernity and Pre-Modernity Implied in Hwa-seong Park`s Novel -FOCUS ON 『Baekhwa』

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Hwa-seong Park is a woman writer, who started her writing on her home Mokpo, through the liberation until 1980s. In spite of her vigorous writing and numerous works of hers, there haven’t been enough studies accumulated about her works. It seems quite inappropriate concerning her position in Honam literary world. Especially the novel Baekhwa has been undervalued, even though it has great significance as one of her early works. This article analyzes conflicts and balances between modernity and post modernity in Park’s early novel Baekhwa. And also, this article addresses how pre-modernism in her novel affected other works. Having not been satisfied with just describing the situation and the reality of people of the time, she paid close attention to the systematic problems. Her works represent genuine modernity while highlighting public as agents of history. In the later part of the novel, people turning up as heroes of the story, not in individual, their struggle with solidarity and cooperation stood out.On the other hand, the novel has limitation in implying patriarchal ideology and nationalism. To Park, Women emancipation indicates that women can demonstrate the most of their abilities without discrimination. Gender problem becomes ousted as the nation confronts complete suffering. In her point of view, the proper images of women are that women are competitive against men, and they aware and retain the calling of the time. These characteristics of her were more emphasized in her later novels after the liberation.
