1950년대 C. D. 루이스 시론서 번역의 의미 연구 ― C. D. 루이스의 <시학입문>, <현대시론>, <현대시작법>을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 1950년대 발간된 C. D. 루이스의 시론 및 창작법에 관한 번역서들을 연구했다. C. D. 루이스의 시 이론서들이 내장하고 있는 시적 이념 및 특성을 정리하고 1950년대에 C. D. 루이스의 시론 번역의 배경과 그것의 문학사적 의의를 밝히고자 했다.
지금까지 '뉴 컨트리파' 시인들이 한국 모더니즘 시와의 관련 아래 비중 있게 다루어졌던 것에 비해 1950년대 뉴 컨트리파 일원이었던 C. D. 루이스에 대한 연구는 매우 미진했다. 따라서 이 연구에서 C. D. 루이스의 번역서인 <시학입문>, <현대시론>, <현대시작법>의 분석해 그 의미를 설명했다.
먼저 1950년대 한국의 문학적 상황을 살피고, C. D. 루이스의 시론서들이 번역된 배경을 살폈다. C. D. 루이스의 시론서들은 각기 다르지만 공통적으로 시인이 처한 역사적이고 사회적인 현실 문제들의 체험을 중시하고 그것을 시에 반영하는 태도를 견지하고 있다. 이점에서 C. D. 루이스의 시론서 번역은 그 자체가 1950년대에 팽배해 있었던 기성 세대의 문학이념들, 즉 순수성, 전통성, 영원성 등에 대응하는 새로운 시정신으로 작동할 수 있었던 것으로 보인다.
C. D. 루이스의 <시학입문>은 대중들이 보다 쉽게 시에 접근할 수 있도록 도와줄 수 있는 책이라는 점에서, <현대시론>은 무질서한 현 우리 시단에 있어서 현대시의 전모(全貌)에 걸쳐서 좋은 상의처(相議處)가 되리라 판단에 의해 번역이 시도되었다. 또한 <현대시작법>은 보다 전문적으로 시의 이미지에 대한 논의들을 깊이 있게 다루고 있어 실제 창작자에게 도움이 될 수 있는 내용으로 소개되고 있다. 세 권의 시론서를 통괄하고 있는 것은 기본적으로 시인은 현실에 민감한 자이며 그 현실 체험이 시에 반영되어야 한다는 시적 태도이다. 이점에서 C. D. 루이스의 시론서들은 1950년대 한국의 모더니즘 시인들과 만나게 되고 이후 1960년대의 참여시 정신적인 기반을 이루게 된다.
정리하면, C. D. 루이스의 시론 번역은 1950년대 우익 보수의 입장을 전면화했던 기성 세대 중심의 문학담론 구조를 견제하며, 한국 현대시의 새로움 즉 다른 가능성을 모색할 수 있는 이론적 토대로 기능했다. 이렇게 1950년대에 이루어졌던 C. D. 루이스의 시론서 번역은 1960년대 참여시와의 관련성 아래 연구되어 왔던 ‘뉴 컨트리파’ 시인들의 이론적 입장이 1950년대에 이미 한국의 문학 담론 속에서 적극적으로 개진되고 있었음을 확인해 볼 수 있는 흥미로운 지점이 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this study, the 1950s-translations of C. D. Lewis's works on poetics such as "The poetic image", etc. is considered. Especially, this research focuses on the analysis of the poetic idea and image included in his works and the literary background and significance of the translations of his works on the poetics.
So far, there has been few studies on C. D. Lewis although lots of researches on the relations between Korea poems and 'new country group' was done. Therefore, this study aims to examine the importance of his works on Korea modernism poetry by analyzing the translations of his writings such as <Poetry for You>, <A Hope for Poetry>, and <The Poetic Image>.
First of all, the situation on Korean literature in the 1950s and the reason why C. D. Lewis' works were translated are presented. In the publications, he held to the opinion that poets reflect their historical and social experiences in their poems. Therefore, it can be considered that the translation itself suggests a new value of the poem compositions which is different from the ideology of literature of the previous generation, e.g., purity, traditionality, eternity, etc.
