Negotiating the “Unhomeliness” through the Diasporic Search for Home in Paule Marshall's The Chosen Place, the Timeless People and Praisesong for the Widow

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 동시대 미국 흑인여성 작가 폴리 마샬(Paule Marshall)의 소설 속에 펼쳐진 이산(diaspora)의 서사를 지그문트 프로이트의 개념 “낯선 친숙함 또는 친숙한 낯섦(the Uncanny)”에 비추어 재해석한다. 잃어버린 아프리카의 집과 아직 찾지 못한 아메리카의 집 사이에 낀 신대륙 흑인들의 주체성에 관한 담론은 19세기 중반 흑인 민족주의자 마틴 들레이니(Martin Delany)에 의해 개진되고, 20세기 초 반제반식민 흑인 지식인 두 보이스(W. E. B. Du Bois)에 의해 치밀하게 논구된 이래, 미국 흑인문학에서 빼놓을 수 없는 화두로 자리 잡아 왔다. 본 논문에서 필자는 공간과 정체성의 접점을 찾는 이 담론의 이론적 토대를 풍요롭게 하기 위해, 프로이트의 개념을 심리 현상 또는 정신분석학적 사례 이상의 것으로 역사화 한다. 사회 이론가 한나 아렌트(Hannah Arendt), 탈식민주의 비평가 호미 바바(Homi Bhabha), 페미니스트 줄리아 크리스테바(Julia Kristeva) 등이 바라보는 프로이트의 개념을 간략하게 소개하는 것은 바로 이런 취지에서이다. 이는 또한 마샬의 작중인물들이 지각하는 “낯섦”(unhomeliness)과 “친숙함”(homeliness)사이의 심리적 거리뿐만 아니라, 바르바도스계(Barbadian) 이민 2세대 작가인 그녀가 역추적하는 미국과 카리브해 지역과 아프리카 사이의 공간적 역학을 분석하는 데에 있어서도 유용하다. 이러한 심리적 간극과 공간적 이반의 얽힌 관계를 읽어내는 비평 작업을 통해, 본 논문이 시도하는 바는 마샬의 텍스트에 표상된 기원과 이산, 정착과 유랑, 실향과 귀향 등과 같은 존재론적 대립 항들에 대한 관찰과, 나아가 각기 다른 인종적 사연을 지닌 문학적 주체들이 이를 극복하거나 화해시키는 가능성에 대한 모색이다.
