Freelancing has emerged in recent years as an alternative career path for those seeking autonomy beyond traditional employment structures. It is often associated with flexibility and autonomy and idealized as a “dream job” that enables a balance between work and personal life. However, a critical question remains: does this type of work arrangement truly empower women with greater autonomy and choice, or does it instead conceal new forms of gendered burden under traditional role expectations?
This study focuses on ten married, childless self-employed women in their 30s, originally from Hong Kong, to explore how they negotiate career decisions, family responsibilities, and fertility intentions. Positioned as “wives” but not yet “mothers,” these women represent a unique and academically valuable group for examining how gender norms function prior to motherhood. The study examines how these women shape their lives under the intersecting pressures of autonomy, insecurity, societal expectations, and the tension between aspiration and lived reality.
By using semi-structured in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, the research was organized around three core hypotheses:
(1) Freelancing women enjoy relatively high time flexibility, but structural factors such as economic insecurity inhibit an increase in fertility intention;
(2) While freelance job may offer flexible coordination of work and domestic duties, unpaid labor may shifted onto women due to prevailing gender expectations;
(3) Spousal support and gender role attitudes significantly influence the sustainability of women’s freelancing careers.
Findings indicate that while time flexibility was positively perceived, the lack of economic stability and institutional support weakened the potential positive effects of autonomy on fertility intentions. It also shown that participants generally accepted unequal household responsibility as logical, especially when framed around availability of time, yet this acceptance reflects a continuation of gendered labor divisions (Hochschild & Machung, 1989; West & Zimmerman, 1987). Furthermore, while spouses tended to express encouragement, the actual degree of support varied widely, influencing women’s career satisfaction and long-term planning.
By centering on women at the intersection of marital commitment and pre-motherhood, this research highlights an underexplored stage of gender role negotiation. It contributes to a broader understanding of how non- standard forms of labor intersect with enduring gender norms, offering valuable implications for future gender-equitable labor and family policy development.
