This study reinterprets Freud's concept of catharsis within the artistic context, exploring how the catharsis experienced by audiences in film can be applied to painting, with the aim of developing immersive exhibition and artistic methodologies in contemporary art. By integrating cinematic techniques into painting and exhibition formats, the study seeks to allow audiences to experience the exhibition as if it were a film, fostering immersion and emotional release. Through this, the researcher aims to present an artistic approach that provides psychological release and satisfaction to the audience, while exploring a creative theory rooted in catharsis.
The study proceeds in two main directions. First, by examining the development of catharsis theory, it analyzes how Aristotle's Poetics left the concept of catharsis undefined, leading to various interpretations over time, including purification and expulsion. The study also explores the limitations arising from these diverse interpretations. Based on this, it investigates how catharsis can be implemented in artistic expression, utilizing Freud's therapeutic catharsis, which encompasses both purification and expulsion, as an alternative approach. This enables the audience to release repressed emotions and experience vicarious satisfaction.
Second, the study analyzes the principles of catharsis in film and the visual characteristics that evoke it, exploring how these principles can be applied to the process of creating paintings. It examines how specific cinematic scenes that embody purification and expulsion catharsis guide the audience’s emotional release, and how the emotional flow and narrative structure of film can be transformed into pictorial expression. By drawing from these cinematic elements and visual compositions, the study proposes a painting methodology that enhances emotional engagement and facilitates emotional release in viewers.
The exhibition planning and artwork production processes focus on how catharsis theory and cinematic techniques are applied. Building on the theoretical background of catharsis and Freud's ideas, the study analyzes how exhibition spaces and artworks can induce emotional immersion and release in the audience. It also explores how cinematic techniques and narrative structures within the exhibition guide the audience’s emotional flow. Through the analysis of works, the study investigates how Freud’s concept of catharsis can be realized in contemporary painting, contextualizing the application of cinematic catharsis within artistic expression. This allows for the concretization of catharsis principles from film into visual artworks, enabling audiences to experience emotional immersion and psychological release.
The analysis of the works focuses on the process of materializing the theoretical research and direction discussed earlier through the Pilgrim’s Progress 2023 series and exhibition design. The study highlights how visual techniques and cinematic elements combine to induce catharsis in the audience. This discussion underscores the significance of the works not merely as aesthetic experiences but as spaces that provide opportunities for audience reflection and self-examination.
The anticipated outcome of this study is to propose a new artistic methodology in contemporary art exhibitions, allowing audiences to experience deep immersion and emotional release. This re-examines the value of emotional experience and immersion in contemporary art, demonstrating that art can extend beyond mere aesthetic experience to offer emotional liberation and catharsis. Ultimately, this study aims to present a new approach to contemporary art exhibitions and creative methodologies that foster profound emotional interaction between art and the audience.
