The advent of Knowledge-Based Society and evolution of network technology allow people from various background collaborate online free from geographic constraints. Such changes promote Collaborative Knowledge Creation and demand development of tools such as knowledge management platforms.
Collaborative Knowledge Creation is created by communication initiated by sharing with other people within the context of a group, as well as through internal visualization (each person’s individual knowledge). Collaborative Knowledge Creation develops by following a progressively spiraling cycle, which builds toward more effective and complete ideas. This Collaborative Knowledge is a result of collaboration with other people, and the process consistently develops by interaction with context and communication.
So, this study regarding knowledge visualization has emerged as a tool for collaboration and knowledge creation from the design perspective. Knowledge visualization can effectively promote Collaborative Knowledge Creation by stimulating rich imaginations through presentation of images. I first determined the process of knowledge creation based on Nonaka’s SECI model, which explains the transfer of knowledge between individuals and a group. The knowledge phase of creation considers characteristics of divergent thinking and convergent thinking, and provides a tool with which to support thinking in the process of creative problem solving.
I then established a framework of design that promotes Collaborative Knowledge Creation. Based on this I developed an example design that promote Collaborative Knowledge Creation by providing visual experience and stimulating visual expression.
My final project, ‘Create-Collabo,’ is the collaborative knowledge creation tool for a small group―ideally numbered fewer than 10―and is based on my extensive research. My final project demonstrates a specific application of this collaborative knowledge creation tool on mobile devices. Create-Collabo effectively enables the expansion and development of thought through organizing members with diverse perspectives within a short period of time. The convergence of ideas and accumulation of shared knowledge results in opportunities for solving common problems. Finally, I expect this research and the Create-Collabo tool to enable people to collaborate in order to solve shared challenges in a dynamic and creative way.
