This study reviews American comparative politics theories in recent years. The review includes fives areas: democratization, state building, the politics of authoritarianism, resource politics, and case study methodology. This review is an attempt to expand our comparative perspective to include non-Western societies. We need to give our proper attention to failed countries to appreciate Korean economic development, democratization, and state building better. However, studies of failed countries do not well receive our scholarly attention, which restrains our comparative perspective. This review also hopes to help to bridge the gap of various area studies and to refine the goals of the "Korean social science.
