Background: POCT is used in many healthcare settings and is a rapidly growing healthcare service. But operator incompetence due to nonexpert cause risk of POCT errors and inappropriate results can be misleading healthcare. Linking POCT to computernetwork system and automatically saving the results are critical points to providing quality service in hospitals. Connectivity Standard POCT1-A provide a connectivity standard to allow different POCT devices to share a common interface and data manager system. We investigated POCT device connectivity in tertiary care hospital, to suggest strategies to POCT management.
Method: We investigated POCT gas analyzers and glucometers and devices providers in Korea. Also we investigated POCT gas analyzers and glucometers usage and devices connectivity in tertiary care hospitals.
Result: Many POCT devices were available in Korea and some devices were able to connect information management system with Connectivity Standard POCT1-A. POCT blood gas analyzers in all tertiary care hospitals(43 hospitals) were connected to hospital information system (HIS) and QC(quality control) data in 26 hospitals (60%) were electrically transferred to HIS, but POCT data manager was used in 19 hospitals (44%). Among in 43 hospitals, POCT glucometers in only 6 hospitals (14%) were connected to hospital information system and POCT data manager was used with QC data.
Conclusion: We know that POCT blood gas device in many hospital connect with HIS, but POCT glucometer connectivity is low. We concluded for POCT management to need more concern to POC connectivity to HIS.
