The purpose of this study is to reveal the elderly care experience in both Korea and Japan, and to shed new light on the male elderly experience in Korean society by comparing the care experience and perception. The experience of care is deeply related to the official care being supported, as well as the awareness and value of care in the country. Such requires non-causal understanding, and qualitative research methods was chosen. The data collection included six elderly Korean men and five elderly Japanese men who received more than a year of care were using official care. These collected data were analyzed according to the process and method of inductive subject analysis.
According to the analysis, male elderly care in both countries had common experiences, but the experience was different depending on the values melted in each country and the type of official care services being recognized and used.
For the elderly men in Korea and Japan, care has come quite suddenly. As such, role of caregiver was needed to provide care to their wives. Under such circumstances, the male elderly faced and accepted the weight of care responsibilities. The male elderly have placed themselves in an active position in the caregiver role, describing the care responsibilities as "husband's duty or responsibilities". Behind the scenes, however, there was an "unavoidable" context in which care had to be taken. In particular, there was a desire not to “burden” their children.
The two countries showed different perceptions in accepting their roles as caregivers. The Korean male elderly showed stronger appreciation for their wives in accepting care responsibilities and displayed fatherhood as a "sacrifice" in their relationship with their children than their male elderly in Japan. It turned out that the historical context of the era, in which male elderly people experienced with their wives during their "youth" years, and the change in values and perceptions of the care of the country made a difference.
The male elderly in both countries, who accepted the care responsibilities, have come to face the 'real' part of care. Care has become a difficult experience for male seniors as they are unfamiliar and involve physical pain. This is because work to satisfy the care needs of dependent wives took place day and night. In the end, the male elderly, who were caregivers, had no choice but to live a care recipient-oriented life. It was also the first time for the male elderly to do household chores such as cooking and cleaning as they were always done by their wives. Care labor included household labor.
The male elderly people eventually adapted to having a hard time due to lack of care skills. They gradually familiarized themselves with care as they learned various skills needed for care and care resources. However, care was an experience in which 'familiar' and 'anxiety' coexisted. Events that may occur at any time or in any way have always caused anxiety in the minds of the male elderly. While they got used to adapting to the required physical skills, it was impossible for them to mentally get used to providing the care.
Care has led to further isolation of the male elderly. Social relations that already were fading away due to care, have further isolated the male elderly as care continued. In particular, the factors that isolated the male elderly in both countries stem from not having anyone to talk to. However, differences in perception based on social values had a different effect on the way the male elderly people in both countries became isolated. In Korea, where the culture of giving and receiving remains deeply rooted, the male elderly were completely cut off from their acquaintances due to care, but in Japan in which has a culture of ‘not causing inconvenience to others’, male elderly became integrated into a culture of ‘hikikomoru’(isolation).
Care for male and elderly people in both countries needed interaction. In other words, care was based on 'relationship'. Through caring, the male elderly experienced discovering a new self by reflecting on and looking at the past. Having a relationship with their wives, they came to understand their wives in a new way and learned a number of "ethical virtues." Furthermore, male seniors will be involved with "third parties" through the use of official care. 'Relationship' is based on trust. Therefore, it has been shown that male seniors have different experiences depending on the degree of "trust" in their relationship to official care.
According to the analysis, older men in Korea and Japan had the biggest difference in experience in their relationship with official care. While the male elderly in Korea were using official care on a limited basis, male elderly in Japan were actively using it on the basis of a sense of rights. Creating this difference involved differences in perception of the maturity and contribution of the plan. It was also analyzed that the care experience varies depending on the type of official care service.
The two countries have Confucian values and similar institutional contexts. However, it can be seen that the social values formed through various contexts create a difference in the perception of male elderly people between the two countries, which affects the care experience in various ways. Care is a component of society based on its culture and values. The implications of the analysis in this study for the practice of social welfare in Korea are as follows:
First, with the increasing number of male elderly care in the future, adjustments to existing elderly care support policies are needed. Since the existing care policy defines care as natural or tentative roles of female, care support policies and services have also been centered on female caregivers. Therefore, policies and services should be tailored to the changing needs of caregivers, breaking away from existing services. The lack of care skills has made it difficult for male elderly to work household chores, but proper support has not been provided. In particular, it is necessary to focus on "male caregivers" as care requires skilled skills.

Second, it is necessary to introduce Korean-style care management. In Japan, care managers provide services for caregivers. Care managers manage to use various services such as short stay, helper, day care, and visiting baths based on the caregiver's needs. This is a major factor that makes the caring experience of male elderly people in both Korea and Japan different. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce 'Korean-style care management' that can provide continuous care counseling and management in accordance with various services.
