This study aims to examine how disability can be re-construed in an ableist society. According to the social model of disability, disability is not based on persons with impairments but rather it is constituted by society. When we stand on the side of the social model of disability, by criticizing society as ableist, then a problem confronts us. Is it possible to reframe the concept of disability on the basis of ableism? Further, when the social model of disability imagines a society where disability disappears, what does it mean to re-construe disability?
Insofar as disability exists in our society, society at present is ableist. Ableist elements in our society stem from the past and influence members of our society. Because a society is phenomena of interactions within members of society, the concept of disability reflects how they understand and perceive disability through their own experiences. Hence, the meaning of disability can be socially re-construed by the same process: disability is created by a society insofar as perception relies on experience.
To prove this argument, this paper refers to Spinoza’s concept of imagination. For Spinoza, imagination is “when the human Mind regards external bodies through the affections of its own body.”(E2P26Cdem) Our experiences are the source of imagination, which is our primary cognitive path, rather than what Spinoza refers to as ‘common notion’-rational thought- or intuitive knowledge. This paper focuses on ‘bilaterality’ of imagination and affection which can bring about a re-construing of disability. The points the research presents are as follows: (1) inertia of image, (2) contingency of imagination, and (3) unwholeness of imagination.
Rather than some researchers distinguishing between social and individual models of disability, each individual’s experience cannot be separated from something public and political. In Spinoza’s thought, the difference between the individual and society is hardly distinguishable, as each is made up of the other. Moreover, scrutiny of imagination reveals how bias arises and that there are no rational and logical grounds of universal and abstract concepts about disability and human, etc. at least on the level of imagination.
Consequently, re-construing disability starts from encountering others as the mutual cause of affections of their own bodies.
