This essay aims to elucidate the evolving significance of the portrayal of elevator accidents in American literature, spanning from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Elevators, from a passenger’s perspective, represent vertical transportation, enclosure, public spaces, social class, or stratum, contingency, and passivity. Early works featuring elevator freefall accidents tend to adopt a realistic tone in their depiction. However, it’s worth noting that such accidents became exceedingly rare in the late 20th century due to the widespread installation of safety devices in elevators to prevent free falls. Therefore, elevator freefall accidents in literary works serve two primary functions. Firstly, they often function as plot devices, introducing suspense and climactic elements into the narrative, a characteristic prominently seen in Hotel (1965). Secondly, these accidents are employed to articulate the anxiety and uncertainty experienced by individuals in the modern industrial or risk society, themes that are well-illustrated in Coover’s work, “The Elevator.”
