The purpose of this study is to suggest road network expansion plan for Kyonggi-Do, which can cope efficiently with rapidly increasing traffics and swiftly changing land use in Kyoggi-Do. For this, a primary study to analyze the direction of spstial changes in Kyonggi-Do has been conducted. The future spatial structure of Kyonggi-Do is predicted to be changed from the radial single center concentrated to the decentralized multi-core concentrated spatial system. In this process, the self-containment of the cities adjacent to Seoul and the regional centers in Kyonggi-Do will be strengthened. Additionally, development pressure on Kyonggi-Do will be continued in the future. Thus, a policy to maintain a moderate level of development density should be employed in order to effectively manage the development pressure.
Since it is expected that basic spatial structure of the Capital metropolitan area should form decentralized multicore concentration, the road networks in Kyonggi-Do is highly desired to harmonize radial-circular and grid pattern networks of arterial roads in order to cope with the spatial restructuring. In this frame, it is necessary to build the expressways in Kyonggi-Do in the long run to be 4×4 networks, which should provide radial-circular function. In the case of major arterial roads, it is necessary to construct regional grid pattern of networks especially in the area of high trip demand and high potential area of grand scale development.
