넷플릭스 드라마 <폭싹 속았수다>의 은유 = “Metaphor in the Netflix Drama When Life Gives You Tangerines”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 넷플릭스 오리지널 시리즈 <폭싹 속았수다>를 대상으로 개념 은유 이론을 활용하여 정서의 시각화 양상을 분석하였다. <폭싹 속았수다>는 ‘제주’가 상징하는 ‘섬’과 ‘바다’의 공간 이미지 그리고 1960년대부터 2020년대까지의 역사적 사건과 사회적 기억을 모계 3대 서사로 풀어내면서 주목받았다. 본 연구에서는 <폭싹 속았수다>의 정서가 공감각적 은유를 통해 구조화하는 과정을 개념 은유 이론을 중심으로 분석하였다. 분석의 결과는 다음과 같다.
먼저 공간적 배경 은유에서 ‘배–태양, 호롱불–달빛, 섬–바다–육지’의 연쇄는 ‘억압–이행–해방’의 정서 구조를 구축하였다. 가족애와 모성, 세대 전승의 감각은 광원·카메라 구도·편집의 리듬을 통해 시각화하였다. 다음으로 시간적 배경 은유에서 ‘정권 교체와 사회 풍조, 뉴스·자막·정책 구호, 복고풍 음악과 카메라 움직임’으로 역사적 사건과 사회적 기억을 가족의 정서로 전이하고, 개인의 가족사를 집단 기억의 층위로 확장하였다. 이 과정에서 ‘잠자리–나비, 신발, 식탁’ 등의 오브제를 반복하여 장면 전환과 관계의 균열·회복을 표지하면서 공간·시간 은유가 작동하는 정서 구조를 체계화하였다.
결론적으로 <폭싹 속았수다>의 정서 구조는 ‘따뜻한 가족 서사’가 아니라, 공간과 시간의 은유 구조가 오브제·음악·카메라 움직임 등과 결합하여 ‘불안·분노·희망·화해’를 재배치하는 공감각적 장치에서 발생하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 이를 통해 OTT 시대의 가족드라마 연구에서 정동의 사회문화적 논의와 영상의 이미지 분석을 연결하는 방법론의 중요성을 확인하였다.

This study analyzes the Netflix drama When Life Gives You Tangerines from the perspective of “visualizing emotion through metaphor,” and explains how the series retains the outer form of a traditional family drama while strongly resonating with contemporary affective structures. As an analytical framework, it combines conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff & Johnson) with film semiotics and montage theory to trace how audiovisual signs organize emotion.
First, in the drama’s spatial background metaphors, the sequences of boat–sun, lantern light–moonlight, and island–sea–sky compose an affective trajectory of oppression, transition, and liberation, while visualizing familial love, motherhood, and intergenerational transmission through shifts in illumination, framing, and rhythm. Second, in its temporal background metaphors, the drama invokes political transitions and social currents, along with news, captions, policy slogans, retro music, and editing patterns, translating historical time into an affective grammar and expanding a private family story into a layer of collective memory. In this process, recurring objects—such as dragonflies and butterflies, shoes, and the dining table—mark scene transitions and the fissures and repairs of relationships, densely mediating the affective points of contact where spatial and temporal metaphors are activated.
Through this metaphorical system of space and time, When Life Gives You Tangerines repositions layered emotions—anxiety, anger, hope, and reconciliation—and clarifies the narrative mechanism of affective healing performed by family melodrama in the OTT era. On this basis, the study proposes an analytical framework that links family drama research with metaphor and affect theory.
