The 21st century that we are living in is an information-oriented society which calls human to make numerous choices independently. In this environment, art needs to give direction to strengthen problem solving ability and to integrate with practical lives by overcoming genre, media and curriculum. Plus, art education needs to consider open and cooperative attitude in such information-oriented society.
Therefore, this research is aimed to give direction to school education by approaching with integration of art and science. By carrying out lessons that relate both art and science, learners can experience plentiful study materials to find mutual correlation and develop self-oriented learning ability. Through this integrated education that improves creativity and holistic personality and cooperation, learners are guided with interest to actively participate in study.
This study has its purpose on finding the effect of integrated learning model of art and science as a cooperative learning model on students' learning motivation and achievement.
To reach the goal of this research, integrated education's concept, types and approach to art integration are reviewed by reflecting an integration in middle school education curriculum as a theological background. Also, after reflecting a cooperative learning model which bases the integrated education, the researcher applied integrated teaching program to the experimental group.
The model of webbed thread was chosen among the integrated education models established by Fogarty in 1991, and Learning Together Model by D. Johsnson and R. Johsnson in 1975 was selected as cooperative learning model and developed to apply to this study.
35 students were each put into a control group and an experimental group out of 70 students from two 2nd grade classes from Y middle school located in Seoul Yeongdeongpo from 1st to 29th of April in 2010. The cooperation-oriented integration program that the researcher has designed for this study was applied to the selected group for 7 times and the control group received traditional art teaching program for 5 times.
Each group's learning motivation and achievement was compared through the ex ante-ex post evaluation sheet. With the result, SPSS v.18.0 package was used to verify meaningful differences between the experimental group and the control group.
The results of this research are as follows.
First, experimental group with the cooperation-oriented program of art and science showed 0.78 higher academic motivation and the control group showed 0.07 increase. The experimental group's improvement of learner's motivation was 11 times higher than that of the control group's, showing a clear influence on improving motivation.
Second, experimental group with the cooperation-oriented program of art and science received 4.60 higher score on average than the control group in learning achievement and showed four times higher increase in improvement of learning achievement.
In conclusion, the integrated education program of art and science guided students to actively enjoy and participate in studying by elevating their motivation. Plus, it proved its effect on improving learning achievement by helping problem solving ability to make creative art activity possible and learn scientific concepts with extended way of thinking.
This result displays that the cooperation-oriented integration program gave a positive effect on 2nd grade middle school students.
This research has its meaning on providing a positive direction on art and science curriculum as well as diverse curriculum's integrated teaching and to encourage research and guidance in more curriculums in the future. More learners in the 21st century are hoped to accomplish more effective and meaningful educational success through this integrated teaching program so that art can be applied more actively with other subjects in diverse way.
