팬덤의 내부분화와 갈등 : 서태지 팬사이트를 중심으로 = Internal Differentiation and Conflict in Fandom

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 한국의 대중문화는 많은 사람들의 삶에서 큰 부분을 차지하고 있다. 특히 대중문화의 필수 조건인 스타들은 대중을 팬이라는 입장에 서게 했다. 팬들은 스타의 존재이유라고 할 수 있지만, 스타와의 관계에서 이들은 대부분 수동적인 위치에 있었다. 그러나 1990년 이후 문화산업이 성장하기 시작하면서 많은 스타들이 생겨났고, 팬들 또한 팬클럽을 결성하여 그 안에서 서로 의견을 나누고 자료를 공유하기 시작했다. 이런 상황에서 인터넷이라는 매체의 등장은 팬클럽 문화에 획기적인 전환을 가져오면서, 익명성이 보장되고 자유로운 참여가 가능한 온라인상의 팬 사이트에 팬들이 모이기 시작한 것이다. 이들은 수동적으로 스타를 바라보던 모습에서 벗어나 각자의 일상을 공유하고, 다양한 생각과 의견을 나누는 경험을 하게 되었다. 그리고 더 나아가 대중문화 전반의 문제들을 개선하기 위해 운동을 펼치는 등의 활동을 하면서 대중문화 전반에서 주체로 등장하기 시작했다. 이러한 변화에 맞추어 팬클럽, 오빠부대 등으로 불리던 이들은 팬덤(Fandom)이라는 신조어로 지칭되기 시작했다.
팬덤(fandom)이란 열광적으로 스타를 좋아하는 사람을 뜻하는 'fan'이란 단어와 -사회, -계(界)를 뜻하기도 하고 지위, 권력, 영지, 세력범위를 의미하기도 하는 '-dom'이란 단어가 합쳐져 생긴 말이다. 따라서 팬덤을 직역하면 연예계, 여성계처럼 '팬계'가 될 수 있고, 넓게 풀이하면 '팬의 권력'이나 '팬의 지위'가 될 수도 있다.
본 연구는 규모가 크고 역사가 오래된 서태지 팬덤의 팬사이트를 대상으로 팬덤의 실질적인 운영과정과 그 내부에서 일어나고 있는 분화과정과 갈등 상황을 분석하고자 했다. 2004년 2월, 4년 7개월 만에 7집을 내고 컴백한 서태지의 활동기간인 1월부터 5월까지의 게시판 글을 양적․질적방법 두 가지를 병행하여 분석했다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다.
우선 게시글 내용분류를 통해 서태지 팬덤이 가장 많은 관심을 갖는 것은 서태지에 대한 것이지만, 팬덤 내부의 이슈나 사회적 이슈에 대한 논의도 많이 이뤄지는 것을 발견했다. 또한 팬사이트 게시판이 이슈에 대한 커뮤니케이션 공간으로 많은 기능을 하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 게시물의 조회수, 추천수, 답글수 분석을 통해 게시판에서의 운영자 역할과 그 영향력을 가늠해볼 수
있었고, 운영자이외의 오피니언 리더들이 존재함을 알 수 있었다. 운영자는 팬들의 감수성을 자극하는 정서지향적인 글을 올림으로써 팬덤의 결속력에 영향을 미치고, 그 외 오피니언 리더들은 논리적이고 자극적인 글을 올리면서 담론을 주도해나가는 특징을 갖고 있다. 하지만 일반 팬들 답글이나 추천이라는 간접적인 방법으로 자신의 의사표현을 하고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다.
다음은 1월부터 5월까지 서태지 팬사이트 내에서 이슈가 되었던 세 가지 사건을 통해 팬덤 내부의 분화과정과 갈등을 살펴보았다. ‘Victim 살리기 운동’과 ‘탄핵문제’, ‘스토커 사건’이라는 일련의 사건 속에서 서태지 팬덤은 끊임없는 갈등과 타협, 토론을 통해 분화하기도 하고 통합되기도 했다. 'Victim 살리기 운동‘의 경우는 팬덤 운동의 방향에 대한 논의가 이뤄졌고, ’탄핵문제‘는 서태지의 정치적 참여에 대한 논쟁이 일어났다. 이 문제는 ’스토커 사건‘과 이어져 팬덤이 어떤 사안에 관심을 가져야 하는지에 대한 문제가 불거지면서, 결국 사회적 성향을 가진 팬덤과 개인적 성향을 가진 팬덤의 분화가 일어나게 된다. 이러한 분화는 각각의 팬들이 갖고 있는 서태지에 대한 다양한 틀과 스펙트럼이 충돌하면서 일어나는 것으로 누가 틀리고 옳다고 할 수 없는 당연한 현상이다. 이들 모두 서태지라는 텍스트에 대해 다른 요구와 스펙트럼을 가지고 있을 뿐이다.
또한 이들은 서태지 팬덤이라는 하나의 이름 안에 속해 있지만, 그 안에서 자신의 성향을 피력하고 다른 팬의 성향을 받아들이는 과정을 거치는가 하면, 자신의 성향에 맞는 곳에 모이기도 한다. 이러한 팬덤의 분화과정은 서태지 팬덤뿐만 아니라 모든 팬덤에서 일어나는 일이라고 할 수 있다. 스타를 좋아하는 팬덤이라는 것이 그 스타를 향해 가지고 있는 팬의식이 주된 요소이고, 그 의식은 모두 다를 수밖에 없기 때문이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Korean popular culture of the day is conquering a large section in life of a lot of people. The stars who were a necessary condition of popular culture in particular let the public stand by entrance called fan. Fans can be called an existence reason of a star, but they were in the position that let mostly you be passive in relation with a star.
However, while culture industry started to grow after 1990, a lot of stars came into being and were built and I beat it, but started what I formed Fan Club too and divided each other an opinion. An emergence of media called Internet is for anonymity is ensured, and free participation to have started that fans gather around a fan site on the on-line where it is possible while bringing revolutionary conversion into Fan Club culture.
Get out of the figure that looked at a star passively, and they share each daily, and divide various thoughts and opinions. And of the back whom will be more better than it, and they spread a culture campaign over they started what appeared in popular culture with main group while being active. They was called Fan Club, who were designated as a new word called Fandom.
This study was going to analyze a specialization process and a trouble situation happening with the object with Fan site of the Seotaiji Fandom that history was old in the real operation process and he inside of Fandom.
The study results are as follows.
First of all, it is thing about Seotaiji that Seotaiji Fandom has most a lot of interests. And a discussion about Fandom inner issue or a social issue is achieved very much. There are a lot of Fan site bulletin boards to a communication space about an issue too they was able to know that was functioning. I was able to know operation role and the influence through notice trouble analysis, and opinion leaders were able to know that they existed. A manager affects solidarity power of Fandom with I bear emotion, and putting the learning that is an incense enemy. I lead discussion while opinion leaders are logical, and increasing a stimulating sentence. But a general fan was able to indirect way called epilogue and recommendation.
The following looked into a Fandom inner specialization process and trouble through the three accidents that an issue worked in Seotaiji Fan site from January to May. Seotaiji Fandom erupted in the a series of accident that Victim was thing campaign and a impeachment problem, a stalker accident to save, and it was integrated. If it was campaign to save Victim, a discussion about the direction where Fandom was campaign was achieved, as for the a impeachment problem, an argument about political participation of Seotaiji happened. It is happened specialization of Fandom to have had Fandom and a personal tendency to have had a social tendency this problem finally.
It is natural phenomenon who is wrong as for this specialization while various molds and spectra about the Seotaiji which each fans have collide by happening, and it is right, and not to be able to do. These all Seotaiji text has other demand and spectrum on a text.
Also, Seotaiji Fandom is belonging to them in one name, but they pass through the process that they express own tendency in him, and accept a tendency of a different fan and gather around a place to meet in own tendency.
