Yin and Yang and the Five Elements are one of the core philosophies that are the roots of all principles or cultures in the East as every theory or concept comprehends Yin and Yang and the Five Elements, the changing principle of nature and human being. Yin and Yang and the Five Elements in the Han dynasty have been applied to a range of principles such as Confucianism, Taoism, medicines and astronomy. It was Dong Zhongshu that represented the change in Yin and Yang and the Five Elements.
This paper demonstrated Yin and Yang and the Five Elements, Dong Zhongshu's philosophical ground, with documentary proofs through birth and development of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. Yin and Yang showed the changing process of the meaning by Shuowenchiehtzu and the Five Elements was first called wufu, then liufu and then wucai in Zuozhuan of the Warring States and finally developed to themselves with additional meanings. Afterwards Yin and Yang and the Five Elements were integrated and activated by Zou Yan and scholars in the Qi dynasty.
Yin and Yang and the Five Elements were first arranged by Yeossichunchu and unprecedentedly developed by Dong Zhongshu, the prime minister of the West Han dynasty. Since then Liu Xiang and Liu Xin, father and son completed them. Dong Zhongshu completed more theoretical and refined Yin and Yang and the Five Elements on the basis of the theory of heaven ‧ man ‧ universe. In Chunqiu of Confucius, the core of Dong Zhongshu's philosophy, 「Gongyangjeon」 made Chunqiu more refined and completed Chunchufanlu on the basis of it. Dong Zhongshu thought that heaven and man consisted of Qi and showed the concrete appearances through Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. He embodied the mutual relationship between heaven and man as both heaven and man were the same kind. The theory of heaven of Dong Zhongshu was an organic universalism and man is known as a miniature of universe by the theory of sensation between heaven and man. Dong Zhongshu was a Confucian scholar and explained that the ultimate goal for Yin and Yang and the Five Elements was to accomplish a safe unified country and various natural disasters caused by misrules of the king and the attitude of the king according to seasons through the Five Elements. Dong Zhongshu achieved one philosophical unification around Confucian scholars by absorbing theories of scholars for Yin and Yang. Dong Zhongshu's Yin and Yang and the Five Elements have been used for numerous fields of Oriental studies such as Oriental medicines and Myeong-Ri as a basic theoretical textbook from the past to the present.
