This study is to explore and present the basic principle of dance assessment. In order to evolve this study, the structure of discipline of dance and the NAEP dance education framework was examined.
Janet Adshead asserted that the central concept of dance found in notions of choreography, dance performance and dance appreciation which are the major characteristic features of dance. Through theoretical, practical, evaluative learning procedures, students experience valuable knowledges, skills and acquire understand about dance.
The NAEP dance education framework which set guidelines for dance assessment covers both process and content. Processes include creating, performing, responding. Content include understanding about dance in terms of context(personal, social, cultural, and historical), aesthetic, form and structure, technical process. and perceptual, technical, expressive, and intellectual/reflective skills. These are major components of learning expected of students who participate in the study of the dance.
Each of knowledge and skills in three main processes could be studied separately. But considered total development of students, they should be studied as a whole.
Knowledge is a base of practical learning and activity, but only assessment of recognizing knowledge itself is little use. Alike skills is not treated as separable. What is important thing is that the knowledge and skills identified are applied in combination and always integrated of various level. The basic principle of dance assessment means integration of creating, performing, responding of the dance with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in dance.
The standard of dance education content is requirement in developing standard of dance education assessment and achievement level. In addition to specific assessment item, instrument, and rating scale will be embodied.
