This study was aimed to investigate experiences and factors of sexual violence while dating among unmarried men. It was also aimed to let people perceive that sexual violence would be definitely a crime and to explore the methods for protecting dating sexual violence at campus and in the workplace. The research participants included 305 unmarried men in Busan Metropolitan area.
The questionnaire was used to collect data and the following analyses were performed in term of using an SPSS 12.0: descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, the T-test, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the regression analysis.
In terms of the experiences of sexual violence on female partners, the results of study showed that sexual harassment was most frequent in a date and it was followed by sexual molestation and dating rape. Among them, sexual harassment in a date accounted for the half of the respondents, which demonstrated that the sexual molestation in a date was very frequent. In the case of the experiences of sexual molestation in accordance with socio-demographic characteristics, the dating experience, degree of education, vocation, monthly average income and possession of a car showed significant results. Namely, it has been observed that the following groups had higher experiences of sexual harassment: those with dating experiences, those with higher education, those with blue collar jobs (functional and manufacturing related jobs) and self-owned jobs in vocation, those with more than 2-million-won average monthly income and those with a car.
Secondly, in the case of the experiences of sexual molestation on their female partners, the dating experience, education, vocation, monthly average income and possession of a car demonstrated significant results. Meanwhile, the dating experience, vocation, average monthly income and possession of a car had the same results in frequent sexual harassment, whereas the group with more than 4-year-university degree had higher experiences of sexual molestation.
The dating experience, vocation, average monthly income and possession of a car had the same results as in the experiences of sexual harassment, whereas those who had completed military services had higher experiences of rape than those without it. In respect to sex-role attitude, allowance of courtship violence and acceptance for common idea for sexual violence, recognition of dating sexual violence, degree of partner control, the results of experiences of dating sexual violence were as below.
First, the group of experiencing sexual harassment indicated more traditional sex role attitudes had higher allowance of courtship violence and higher degree of dating partner control and lower recognition of dating sexual violence than other groups.
Secondly, the group of experiencing sexual molestation showed more traditional sex role attitudes and had lower recognition of dating sexual violence and higher degree of dating partner control than other groups.
Thirdly, the group of experiencing rape during dating indicated more traditional sex-role attitude and had higher acceptance rate for common idea for sexual violence, higher control for their dating partners and lower recognition of dating sexual violence than other groups.
Lastly, when examining the factors affecting the experiences of sexual violence, the degree of control for their dating partners and courtship experience served as the significant factors for dating sexual harassment; sex-role attitude, vocation, courtship experience, degree of control for their dating partners and acceptance for common idea for sexual violence for sexual molestation; and vocation, allowance of courtship violence and recognition of dating sexual violence for rape.
As shown in the results of this study, over 50% of participants indicated their experiences of sexual harassment and sexual molestation. It has been found that rape was accureal during dating even if it was not so often. Accordingly, it would be necessary to enhance consciousness about proper dating, seriousness of sexual violence during dating, and prevention against it.
