제주도 벼농사의 역사지리적 연구 Vol.26 No.3 : 천제연 일대를 사례로 = Historical Geography of Rice Farming in Jeju Island -A Case of Cheonjeyeon Area

국문 초록 (Abstract)

제주도는 과거로부터 잡곡을 주식으로 삼는 문화권이기 때문에 쌀은 매우 귀한 존재였다. 육지에서 쌀을 들여오기 힘든데도 제주도내에서는 단 1%의 지역에서만 쌀을 생산할 수 있었다. 제주도에서 벼농사를 할 수 없었던 가장 큰 이유는 지질적 특성상 물을 가둘 수 있는 논(水田)을 만드는데 제약이 많았기 때문이다. 쌀을 생산하기 위해 제주도에서는 다양한 노력을 했는데 본 논문에서는 중문동 천제연 일대의 벼농사 지역을 사례로 그 개척과정을 밝혀 보았다. 사례지역은 중문동 천제연 일대로 선택했다. 이 지역은 구한말에서 일제강점기에 벼농사가 시작된 지역으로 토지는 평탄하고 넓었으나 물이 부족하여 벼농사를 할 수 없었던 지역에 수로를 건설하여 벼농사를 했다는 사실에서 매우 특이한 지역이다. 이곳에서 벼농사를 하려 했던 이유는 쌀이 고소득 작물이라는 점이 크게 작용했다. 하지만 이것은 쌀을 먹기 위해서 키운 것이 아닌 판매 혹은 상례용 쌀을 확보하기 위한 수단으로 활용되었다. 현재 중문동은 중문 관광단지가 들어서면서 더 이상 벼농사를 할 수 없게 되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

It was very difficult for people who lived in Jeju Island to have enough rice even though the staple food of the Koreans is rice. It was not only hard to bring a great deal of rice in Jeju, but also the rice crop in agriculture has formed only one percent of rice production in a situation of environmental limitation. The main reason why doing rice farming was tough is that the volcanic landform has not allowed them to store enough water which makes crops grow. To produce sufficient rice for the inhabitants of the Jeju, they have made various efforts; subsequently, we have been researching for the process of the reclamation work through studying materials of reference and making field investigation. Rice paddy around the areas of Cheonjeyeon was own by lots of local residents, which might be meant that this was to secure rice for the funeral rites or profit-making purpose no for food. Nowadays Jungmun-dong rice farming wa no longer retainable since 1990's because the tourist facilities complex was indiscriminately developed.
