This study analyzes the impact of Korean universities' innovation activities on regional innovation. It examines the development of the regional innovation system (RIS) concept and the evolving role of universities. University innovation activities are categorized into four areas: human resource supply, research performance, technology commercialization, and start-up support. Data from 2020-2022 were collected from the Higher Education in Korea Portal, managed by the Korean Council for University Education. The dependent variable, R-COSTII, was sourced from the Regional Science and Technology Innovation Capacity Evaluation by KISTEP. Simple regression analysis was conducted to assess the influence of university innovation activities on R-COSTII, and scatter plots were used to visualize regional distributions. The analysis revealed that research performance, technology commercialization, and start-up support positively impact regional innovation, with student start-up sales and international patent registrations showing significant effects. Additionally, scatter plot analysis identified two patterns: universities in Seoul and metropolitan areas contribute through start-up performance, while those in regions with National Institutes of Science and Technology drive innovation via technology commercialization. This study highlights the regional contributions of university innovation activities and offers insights for developing tailored regional innovation strategies.
