This study analyzes patent data containing ESG keywords to identify related technology trends. Patent data filed worldwide up to August 2024 were retrieved using the WIPS ON. After removing noise data, a total of 222 patents were selected as valid patents. First, global patent filing trends are outlined. The first ESG keyword patent was filed through the PCT in 2011. Patent filings resumed between 2015 and 2017. Patent filings have increased sharply since 2019. In 2022, patent filings reached 73. The proportion of patent filings by country was highest in South Korea, followed by China, the United States, Japan, and Europe, in that order. The IPC analysis revealed that patents in the G06 class were the most prevalent. Keyword frequency analysis revealed that 'enterprise,' 'index,' 'data,' 'evaluation,' 'information,' 'score,' 'module,' 'database,' 'news,' and 'company' appeared as the most frequent terms. Keyword network analysis indicated that the majority of trends in ESG keyword patents pertain to patents related to 'devices for obtaining data on ESG elements of enterprises, storing information, and conducting analysis' and 'systems based on modules that perform evaluation and score calculations according to ESG indices.' In addition, patents were identified related to 'analysis of ESG risks for enterprises,' 'enterprise evaluation servers that obtain and analyze news articles,' and 'methods for the storage of enterprise ESG information based on blockchain.
The trends and directions of technology identified through patent analysis reflect the development of technologies suited to current conditions. Developing technologies and establishing patent strategies in response to ESG-related regulations and changes will be essential for the sustainable growth of enterprises.
