올바른 커뮤니케이션 문화를 위한 토론 프로그램의 역할과 과제

국문 초록 (Abstract)

언로가 확장되고 민주화가 진전됨에 따라 다양한 목소리가 여과없이 분출되면서 우리 사회는 곳곳에서 갈등을 겪고 있다. 반복되는 갈등으로 인한 사회적 비용을 단단히 치루기 시작하면서 갈등을 극복하고 사회적 합의를 이루기 위해서는 이성적 토론만이 유일한 해결책이라는 인식이 확산되고 있다. 사회의 공적, 중추적 커뮤니케이션 채널인 방송이 바로 이러한 공론장 역할을 담당해야 하고, 그중에서도 토론 프로그램은 토론의 원형을 제시함으로써 바람직한 커뮤니케이션 문화를 정착시키는 데 있어서 중심적인 역할을 담당해야 한다. 오늘날 우리 사회에서 토론은 가장 보편적인 사회적 커뮤니케이션 관행이 되었지만 토론이라는 낯선 현상에 대한 개념조차 제대로 정립되어 있지 않다. 대화, 토의, 회의 등 유사한것 같지만 목적과 절차가 다른 커뮤니케이션 현상이 모두 토론이라고 불릴 만큼 토론이라는 용어가 범람하고 있다. 본 연구는 토론 프로그램의 문제점을 점검하면서 일상의 토론 문화 부재가 방송의 토론 프로그램에도 그대로 복제되어 나타난다는 것을 확인했다. 토론 프로그램의 개선점에 대한 논의를 통하여 본 연구는 우리 사회에서 바람직한 커뮤니케이션 문화를 정착시키기 위한 방안을 모색하려고 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Due to the enrichment of social communication channels and the advancement of democracy, disinhibited voices bring forth conflicts in many sectors of Korean society. As many unsettled conflicts entail a large amount of social costs, people became to realize that rational communication is the only means to reach the social consensus. Broadcasting, particularly debate programs, by exemplifying the paragon of social deliberation standards, should take the lead in establishing a desirable communication culture. Although debate communication has been practiced in Korea for many years, even its definition is not widely agreed upon. Similar but drastically different terms representing various ways of exchanging social opinions, such as discussion and conversation among other things, are all interchangeably used with debate. The current study, by scrutinizing the problems associated with TV debate programs, came to a conclusion that lack of debate culture in daily routine is repeated in TV debate programs. Discussion of TV debate programs will provide insights into the endeavor for upscaling societal communication practices.
