      This study metaphorically investigated how the perspectives of reading have been developed and have been developing in a human being`s reading history for the past five thousand more years. Going back to the past, we might know that there were three paradigm shifts with related to the definitions of reading. That is, a perspective on reading has moved from a transmission perspective to a translation perspective and to an interactive one for the past reading history. Recently, computer or media literacy was added to traditional literacy that was defined as the ability to be able to read and write fluently. Very recently, furthermore, there was an effort to understand human being`s literacy acts to do meaning-making with various symbolic systems as a plural term, literacies, rather than a traditional singular term, literacy. Metaphorically viewing a transmission perspective of reading as a jar, a translation perspective as a treasure hunting, and an interactive one as a bargain, the investigator delved into the human being`s reading history for the past five thousand more years. In addition, some recent issues on literacy and literacies were examined.
