the purpose of this study is to analyze Hyegang Ch'oi, han-ki's theory on Moral Education, to investigate their historical status and to examine their role in today's moral educational.
In order to investigate the above, this study is devided into the following chapter. Chapter two, surveyd historical background of Ch'oi's theory on moral education. Chapter three, analyzed his theoretical basis for a Confucius moral education. Chapter four, looked at Ch'oi's philosophical basis for his theory on moral education.
Chapter five, examined two parts of Ch'oi's theory, the purpose and the method of moral education.
Section one searched the possibility of a moral eduction. A human being's ability to recognize and think makes it possible to improve and develop moral consciousness. Morality is a specific characteristic possessed only by human beings, and can be regarded as a touchstone for being 'human'.
Section two examined the principles of a moral education. According to Ch'oi, all existence is 'Ki(氣)' and its nature is 'HwalDongWoonWha(活動運化)'. So, the Ki of WoonHwa is the source of all life. The above WoonHwa theory is the main principle of Ch'oi's ideas on moral education. Ch'oi's moral theory aims to make a healthy society in order to make a healthy individual. He thought that the human order should be in harmony with the law of nature. So, in his opinion, nature and morality are a united whole.
Section three examined two purposes of moral education. The first purpose is based on 'ChunInDoDuckIn(天人道德人)'. The second purpose is to make a great society where every individual is respected, all people are equal, and justice is realized.
Section four investigated the contents of moral education.
① Ch'oi put emphasis on 'SamCh'ungKyo(三層敎)'. It indluds InSaKyo(人事敎)·InDoKyo(人道敎)·InChunKyo(人天敎). Through this, it can be iferred that Ch'oi's philosophy was brodened from the individual ethic to the life ethic including social and environmental problems. ② He emphasized moral education in everyday life and thought positively about human desire. ③ He considered InUiYeJi(仁義禮智) and ORyun(五倫) as important contents of education. ④ Ch'oi made much of the union between physics and ethics.
Section five examined the methods of moral education.
① As the object of education is for humanity, Ch'uckIn(測人) is particularly significant. ② He presented various methods of education based on the object and the condition. ③ He emphasized the experience that comes from everyday life. By this, it can be inferred that he put great emphasis on a practical moral education. ④ He thought of humankind, society, and nature as one organization. Therefore, he viewed that ChunInWoonHwa(天人運化) should be standard in moral education. ⑤ He thought that rewarding virtue and punishing vice, as a method to motivate students, was necessary for moral education. ⑥ He provided a system of discipline, based on the Confucian disciplinary method.
Chapter six, investigated their historical status and examined their role in today's moral education.
