This study tried to look into the growth process of a city called ``Tongyeong`` and its meaning through the transitional process of an urban space. The spatial composition during the construction period of Tongjeyeong is similar to that of general Provincial Eupchi (邑治); however, it was reflected in the characteristics of the military camp, and the distinction between public buildings and private houses was unclear. The construction of Tongjeyeong Castle during the time of King Sukjong not only emphasized the appearance of Tongjeyeong to look efficient and majestic, which might have appeared very narrow and small in terms of its topography, but also, it was meaningful for raising its status as a military camp by clearly separating Tongjeyeong from the living area of the private sector in the urban area of expanding ``Tongyeong``. However, the inner castle area, which obtained the higher closure because of the construction of Tongyeongseong, harbored a limitation in creating a new space afterwards. New spaces were created through the landfilling of Gangguan (江口岸), the external castle area during the 18th to 19th centuries. Such a new space in which active commercial activities occurred was produced by the development of Naechang (內倉) and Gangguan, which were created around the southern gate of the castle along with the expanded production of products followed by the change in functions of the craft work studios of the inner castle area. Based on the development of the commodity money economy, of shipping and fishery, and of the handicraft industry which developed into a cooperative stage, the place which had begun to be created by the need and will for Tongjeyeong played a pivotal role in the modern urbanization of ``Tongyeong``, and became the symbolic space of a new ideology which was against the ruling space of Tongjeyeong during the Middle Age. Also, the area of a modern city became gradually extended whereby expanding the housing space of the private sector even to the far away island area, not to mention the Chunwonmyeon area, located on the south of Wonmun, thanks to the inflow of new population. Through such a process, ``Tongjeyeong``, a city of the Middle Age, ruled the region with its own function and power; thus, it attracted many goods and people. Also, its inner driving force and socioeconomic change helped the city to grow into the modern city of ``Tongyeong`` by expanding the border of the city to the suburban area through the densely populated process of downtown. However, despite such a dialectic growth process in the city, the modern restructuring of ``Tongyeong`` could not help but reveal a certain limitation owing to the intervention and involvement of the ruling system of Tongjeyeong, and during the modernization, the spaces of ``Tongyeong`` shifted into a repositioned colonial modern city according to the need of colonial rule and exploitation.
