한국 종합일간지 기사의 사실성 입증 기제에 관한 연구 = 조선일보와 한겨레신문 사회면을 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to analyze the rhetorical devices that reporters use to encourage readers to believe the information of the news articles as 'facts.' This study has borrowed the theoretical perspective of van Dijk that sees the news as a form of public discourse. van Dijk defines the news discourse as a speech act of assertion and argued that the major aim of news is to achieve credibility with readers. He suggests three different devices that reporters use to enhance the factuality of the news information: Direct observation, quotations, and numbers. This study applied the perspective to the news articles in the Society pages of two Korean national newspapers; the conservative Chosun Ilbo and progressive Hankyoreh Shinmun. The society page represents the unique pagination of the Korean daily journalism, covering crimes and social trends, among others. This study has found that news in the society pages of the Korean newspapers frequently use the quotations and numbers to imply the news information as facts. But direct observations are rarely used. Instead, this study has found a rhetorical device of 'quasi-direct observation,' that is, to personify the actions of governmental institutions or private organizations to be reported. This study shows that reporters tend to treat government institutions or nongovernment organizations as human beings and describe as if they has seen these institutions' actions or decisions. Reporters even quote the institutions and organizations as if they speak. Implications of these findings have been discussed.
