폴 보울즈의 초현실주의 단편에서의 신체의 타자성 = Otherness of Body in Paul Bowles’s Surrealist Short Stories - “The Scorpion,” “By the Water” and “Allal” -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 폴 보울즈의 초현실주의 단편들에서 나타나는 신체의 타자성을 분석하려는 시도이다. 작가의 무의식을 반영하는 자동적인 글쓰기 방식으로 쓰여진 「전갈」과 「물가에서」및 작가 생활 후기에 마약을 복용한 채로 저술된 「알랄」을 분석할 것이다. 「전갈」은 동굴에서 고립되어 살아가는 늙은 여인의 꿈을 보여준다. 꿈속에서 그녀는 소녀가 되어서 천장이 없는 폐쇄된 방으로 들어간다. 자아의 무의식을 상징하는 이 공간으로 전갈이 들어온다. 그녀는 처음에 전갈을 두려워하고 혐오하지만 나중에는 목구멍 속으로 들어오는 전갈과 일체화된다. 전갈이 상징하는 것은 위험하지만 거부할 수 없을 정도로 유혹적인 타자인데, 꿈속에서 그러한 타자와 동화된다는 것은 타자성에 대한 은밀한 욕구를 반영한다. 「물가에서」에서는 주인공 아마르가 북아프리카의 한 도시를 방문했다가, 갈등을 일으키게 되어 라즈락이라는 괴물에 쫒겨 탈주하는 과정이 초현실적으로 묘사되어있다. 반인반수와 같은 몬스터인 라즈락은 비정상적인 신체를 넘어서 사회적·문화적 타자성을 표상한다. 아랍세계의 절대적인 지배 원리를 상징하는 라즈락의 추격은 타자성에 대해서 저자가 느끼는 잠재적인 공포를 상징한다. 「알랄」은 주변부적인 타자인 젊은이 알랄이 뱀으로 변신하는 과정을 초현실적으로 극화한다. 알랄과 함께 있던 뱀이 해체되며 거대한 눈으로 변하자, 그는 눈동자의 틈을 통하여 빨려 들어가서 뱀으로 변신한다. 거대한 눈은 타자의 시선을 상징하므로, 타자의 응시를 수용하는 것을 넘어서서 타자와 동화된다는 것을 의미한다. 알랄이 상징하는 것은 정상성과 타자성의 경계를 넘어서는 일탈이다. 타자에 대한 차별과 구분에 근간한 지배체제에 대하여 알랄은 위협적인 존재가 된다. 재현의 영역에서 금기시되는 광기의 육체로 자신을 취급하며 억압하는 인간에 반항하는 알랄은 죽음으로 최후를 맞는다. 타자성을 수용하는 주변부적인 신체들에 대한 묘사에는 오리엔탈리즘이 기저하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article is an attempt to analyze Otherness of body in Paul Bowles’s surrealist stories including “The Scorpion,” “By the Water” and “Allal.” In “The Scorpion” an isolated old woman living in a cave has a dream. In it, she as a girl enters a closed room with no roof. Through the opening enters a scorpion. She fears, yet finally swallows it. The scorpion as a symbol of sexual impetus becomes a part of her body. This implies the acceptance of the Otherness represented by the animal, which is nominally rejected. “By the Water” as well as “The Scorpion” was written through automatic writing, a mode of activating the unconscious. A hybrid monster called Lazrag is composed of partly human and animal parts. The monster unceasingly chases Amar, the protagonist, which reflects the Western fear about the Oriental Other. In “Allal” Allal, a marginal figure, is transformed into a snake. In the process of metamorphosis, the snake, favored by Allal, is deconstructed and reshaped into a huge eye with a split. Irresistibly drawn into it, he metamorphoses into the snake, which symbolizes the acceptance of the gaze of Other. By transgressing the boundary between the normative and Otherness, Allal poses a threat to the hierarchical dominant structure. Allal is treated as a body that should be expelled from the realm of representation. Resisting the oppression by humans, Allal comes to a tragic end of death. Orientalism underlies the abnormalizing representation of non-Western bodies.
