The aim of this paper is to research on the length of vowels centeringonsounds data of Joseoneodokbon, the oldest materials of sounds for teaching elementary school students. I analyse the data by the type of prosodic units, especially accentualphrase(AP)andintonationalphrase(IP) in this paper. The results of this study are as follows. 1) In general, the length of vowels, the underlying length of segment, is realized in initial position of AP. The percentage of this type is 89%. 2) In some cases, the lengthof vowels is realized in non-initial position of AP. For example, length of vowels is realized inside words,‘gama:ni(quite), Se:jong-Dae:wang(Thegreat King Sejong)’, inside AP’s, ‘koreul go:lmyeo (snoring loudly), geo:jinmal ma:ra (Don’t tell a lie)’. 3) The length of vowels in some words, for example, gama:ni (quite), gohyang(one’s birthplace), has been changed since 1930’. Finally,Icomparethe length of vowels in 1930’ with the tones of Middle-Korean. As a result, I found out that the realizations of vowel length and tone show many affinities, especially in compound words and Chinese-derived words.
