당사자 렌즈로 바라본 “나의 삶”:정신장애인 포토보이스 연구 = “My Life” Through the Lens of Persons with Psychosocial Disabilities: A Photovoice Study

This study is aimed at attaining an enhanced understanding of lived experiences of people with psychosocial disabilities (PDs) from the first person’s point of view. Seven individuals participated in a six-session photovoice group; they took pictures of images related to the session theme they had selected as a group and shared them by telling the experiences and feelings attached to the pictures. Four themes and thirteen sub-themes emerged from their narratives: (1) My symptoms (my other reality, sufferings from isolation, forced sacrifice); (2) Discrimination, prejudice, and my feelings (discrimination and prejudice everywhere, being an outsider, self-image); (3) What made me change (things that make me happy, trying to find ways to re-enter the world, encouragement from people and support from PD peers, finding true self by even accepting sick me); (4) My wishes, dreams and hopes (living an ordinary life, wanting to socialize with others, being involved in PD advocacy). The authors discusses sufferings, passions, and hopes of persons with PDs as examplified in their photovoices. Implications for policy and practice were addressed to help persons with PDs regain power over their lives.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 정신장애인의 삶의 경험을 당사자의 시각에서 이해하고자 정신장애인 7명을 대상으로 6회의 포토보이스 활동을 실시하였다. 연구 참여자들은 함께 선정한 주제에 대해 각자 사진을 촬영하고 사진에 담긴 경험과 감정을 공유하는 집단 토론에 참여하였다. 분석 결과, 다음과 같은 4개의 대주제와 13개의 하위주제가 도출되었다. (1) 내가 경험한 증상(나의 또 다른 현실, 단절의 고통, 강요된 희생), (2) 차별과 편견, 그리고 나의 느낌(도처에서 편견과 차별을 접하다, 주변인이 되다, 내 존재의 이미지), (3) 나를 변화시킨 동력(내게 기쁨을 주는 일, 다시 세상으로 들어가기 위한 모색, 주변의 응원과 동료의 지지, 아픈 나도 수용하면서 비로소 온전한 나를 발견), (4) 나의 바람, 꿈, 그리고 희망(소소한 일상을 누리며 보통의 삶을 살기, 다시 사람들과 어울리기, 정신장애인 당사자운동에 참여하기). 본 연구는 정신장애인의 삶의 과정에서 당사자가 경험하는 고통, 삶의 원동력과 희망에 대한 논의를 통해 정신장애인들이 삶의 주체로 살아가는데 필요한 정신보건서비스 및 정책에 대한 사회복지적 함의를 제공하였다.
