북한주민들의 중국에서 남한 미디어 이용 실태 연구 = A Study on the Current Uses of “South Korean Media” by North Korean People in China

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the closed North Korean society, people experience the outside world second-hand through outside information. South Korean videos, which are introduced into North Korea through smuggling in the border areas between North Korea and China in spite of the strict control and monitoring of the North Korean regime, are spreading even into the inland areas. There are, however, limitations with North Korean people’s exposure to the South Korean media since the North Korean regime strives to shut off outside information thoroughly even by running a squad devoted to South Korean videos that have been defined as a “capitalist delinquent style” by the regime. The purposes of this study were to investigate how North Korean people would get their hands on South Korean videos and how much they would watch them in China and to analyze the information they would obtain through South Korean videos. Only a limited number of North Korean people can make a legal visit to China. There is a need to examine their behavioral style since the changes to their consciousness due to their life and media contacts in China can serve as communicators of information to people around them as well as them when they return to North Korea. Those findings are expected to result in implications for media integration plans between North and South Korea in the future.
