6. Affirmative appraisalThe Philosophy of Descartes has been recognized to have attained truth by the use of reason. And what he wart seeking was not to discover a multiplicity of isolated truths but to develop a system ol true Propositions in which nothing would be Presupposed which was not self-evident and indubitable. There would then be an organic connection between all the Parte of the system, and the whole edifice would rest on a sure foundationWith a view to discovering such an absolute certainty, he employed methodic doubt (or, Cartesian doubt) and thereby eventually found out the most evident truth in tIne affirmation ol'cogito. ergo sum'(I think, therefore I am) This basic truth was not derived from any other proposiition but was attained intuitively, he said. On this foundation of an ab,iolute certainty, he was now able to deduce his metaphyiiical reality, for instances existente of God and realm of the matter. The accepting of thin mind-body duality (thinking and extensional substances) has given rise to the problems and limitatation of his philosophy, of which the present writer treated a lot in this essay. But, despite many difficulties and problems might be indicated in his dualistic philosophy. Descartes'influence upon modern sciences and Philosophy cannot be doubted. For a few illustration, we can cite Hegel and the German Idealistic philosophy, Husserl and the modern phenomenological philosophy, English philosophy of mind, his status in the contemporary "Modernity-Postmodernity" debate. Hegal looked on the philosophy of Descartes as a beginning of the development of absolute idealism and Husserl regarded it as an anticipation of Phenomenology : because, they have stressed on 'Subjectivity'as the Cartesian point of departure. Troublesme matter of mind-body duality in his philosophy also opens the way to the theories of mind and the currencl hot debates concerning post-structvalistic culture and society.
