근대 전통춤의 형성과 민족주의적 성찰 = Formation of Korea's traditional dance in modern times and its examination from a viewpoint of nationalism

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This research aims to examine the duplicity and contradiction of Korea's traditional dance in Korea's modern times and to suggest the direction of philosophical foundation for Korea's traditional dance that is desirable and sustainable based on nationalism which inspires Korean people's pride. The traditional dance has the following features: (1) a pursuit of dance as art through the creation and modernization of Korea's traditional dance and its stage, (2) the emergence of professional choreographer of Korea's traditional dance, (3) the elevation of the status of dancers of Korea's traditional dance, (4) their performance in one stage due to collapse of own stage of court dance and folk dance, (5) Seong-Joon Han's collection, re-creation and performance of traditional dance, and (6) contemporary classification of modern dance such as Seung-Huy Coi's New Dance. Korea's traditional dance in Korea's modern era has created the today's dance culture on the current of historical and social change. The idea of nationalism to establish Korean people's national identity was strongly on the rise in Korea's modern times. This idea influenced Korea's traditional dance and treated New Dance, a dance with a new form, as a material and form of the traditional dance, together with an effort to preserve the traditional dance in spite of the obstructive policy of those day's Japanese government. However, this had limits; those day's people did not recognize the essential element of the idea but used it just as a form of art in itself, and finally it was gradually showing a pure art-oriented tendency due to the Japanese government's intention. Nevertheless, we consider as a positive aspect the fact that Korea's traditional dance had an independent form of art in Korea's modern times. In conclusion, we can draw from this that Korea's modern history exerted a decisive influence on characteristics of Korea's traditional dance.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 근대 전통춤의 이중성과 모순에 대한 근본적인 성찰을 통해 민족의 자긍심을 고취시킬 수 있는 민족주의를 바탕으로 한 바람직한 전통춤이 존속될 수 있는 철학적 토대의 방향성을 제시하고자 하였다. 근대 전통춤의 특징은 전통춤의 창작화 내지 현대화와 극장무대화를 통한 예술로서의 춤을 추구한 점, 전업적인 춤 작가의 출현과 춤꾼의 지위가 향상된 점, 궁중정재와 민속춤의 고유의 판이 와해되고 한 공간에서 공연된 점, 한성준의 전통춤 집대성 및 재창조 무대화, 최승희의 신무용 등 근대무용에 함축되어 있는 춤들의 동시대적 유형화라 할 수 있다. 이러한 역사적·사회적 변동의 기류를 통과하면서 전통춤은 오늘날과 같은 춤 문화를 만들어왔다. 무엇보다 한국 근대사는 식민지 체제로 인해 우리의 주체성을 찾고자 하는 민족주의 사상이 강하게 대두되었다. 이러한 사상은 한국 전통춤에도 영향을 끼쳐 일본의 정책에도 불구하고 우리의 전통춤을 보존하려는 노력과 함께, 새로운 형식의 춤이었던 신무용도 전통적인 소재나 형식을 취급하였다. 하지만 그것이 그 본질적인 요소를 인식하지 못하고 단지 예술자체를 위한 형식 추구였고 강압적인 일본의 의도 아래 점차 순수예술지향의 경향으로 갔는데 그 한계가 있다. 그러나 여러 한계에도 불구하고 우리 전통춤이 근대화의 시기에 독립적인 예술로 형식을 갖게 되어졌다는 점은 긍정적인 면으로 볼 수 있다. 이처럼 한국 근대사는 한국 전통춤의 성격을 결정짓는데 거대한 영향력을 행사했음을 알 수 있었다.
