최양일의 <피와 뼈>로 본 물신의 기표, 폭력 = The Significance of “the Thing” (das ding) Viewed throughChoi Yang Il’s Blood and Bones―“Violence”

The symbol of “the thing” (das ding) is not presented only as the “money and gold.” In Blood and Bones, goods and worldly desire represent all sources of fetishism shown as violence. For example, there are violence and desire of wealth ahead of ideology, and the film shows the image of man being immersed in goods and worldly desire with violence in the relationship with wife, children, the government, the nation, and the partition of a nation.
The film describes the process of residents of Jeju Island, who have serious economic problems, entering Osaka and being turning into leviathan. However, the description, rather violent in detail, eventually presents the human greed toward the ‘fetish’ behind the violence. This presents both the clash between nations (Korea and Japan) and the clash within the people of the same nationality (Jochongnyeon and repatriation to the north) that are shown through the Korean- Japanese in an awkward situation of leviathan, in a chronological manner.
“The thing” is presented variously through life, sex, death and goes through the history of Korean residents in Japan. Even when analyzing the term "Korean residents in Japan," it could be acknowledged that the term stems from the history and material greed of Japan’s compulsive pillage in Korea.
Additionally, the fact that Kitano Takeshi, who is the most typical Japanese actor and director, acted as the main character in telling the Korean story directed by a Korean director presents a strange boundary. Director Say Yoichi (Choi Yang Il) shows the tragedy of a twin through the violence in his next film Soo.
Hard-boiled style terror and violence favored by the director displays the common human relationship in our surroundings through the panorama. Moreover, he points out what can be trusted and what is the real value of beauty. It has to be seen by new values not found in Korean movies and also requires patience. Although it is the masterpiece that widened the theme of film usually only sought for in a film festival, people with feminist orientation might not like this film.
