한글 마춤법 통일안'(1933) 보급을 위한 조선어학회의 활동 = The Activities of Joseoneo Society for the Spread of the 'Draft for the Unified Spelling System of Hanguel'(1933)

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

]The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the spread of 'Draft for the Unified Spelling System of Hanguel'(hereafter this will be referred to as 'Tongilan')of the Joseoneo Society(Korean language Society). Korea, where there had been no official principles about Korean language before, got its first principles, called 'Tongilan', by the Joseoneo Society in 1993. This principle reflected the fact that the Joseoneo Society tried to protect Korean under the rule of Japan. In order to spread the 'Tongilan' throughout the nation, the Joseoneo Society did away with conventional ways to publish journals and changed the editorial systems and contents 'to respond to the demands of the public.' This is very significant in that they were not separated from the public, but intended an active spreading movement by approaching the public. After the announcement of the 'Tongilan', the Joseoneo Society planed several columns and published them serially in the Hanguel more than a year: 'Words from People in Every Field(1-7)', 'Correction of Newspaper Articles(1-4)', 'Practicing Correct Korean(1-7)', 'Practice of New Final Consonant(1)', and 'Questions & Answers(1-7)' Through these columns, they could make the 'Tongilan' in wide use. In addition, by doing this, they could not only teach Korean, but also inspired patriotism to the public. This thesis, which argues the movement of the Joseoneo Society to spread the 'Tongilan', shows that the Joseoneo Society's movement to provide the Tongilan was very important. The Tongilan was not a highbrow principle, seperated from the public, but rather it was intended to be practically used by Koreans. Furthermore, this movement shows that a language can play an important role to protect its nation when people lose their country.
