The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of psychomotorik activities on self-regulation and smartphone overdependence among middle school students at risk of smartphone overdependence. Recently, smartphones have become an essential medium in adolescents’ daily lives. However, excessive smartphone use has emerged as an important educational and social issue because it can negatively affect academic performance, emotional stability, and social relationships. Since adolescence is a developmental period during which self-regulation is not yet fully established, educational approaches that enhance self-regulation are needed, rather than approaches that simply restrict smartphone use. Therefore, this study focused on psychomotorik activities, which emphasize movement experiences and social interaction, and empirically examined their effects. The participants were first-grade students at C Middle School located in C City who were classified as being at risk of smartphone overdependence. Participants were selected using the Smartphone Overdependence Scale for Adolescents developed by the National Information Society Agency (NIA). A total of 30 students who agreed to participate in the study were selected. Based on their risk levels, participants were assigned to an experimental group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15) through stratified random assignment. The experimental group participated in twelve sessions of psychomotorik activities. A pretest-posttest control group design was employed, and self-regulation and smartphone overdependence were measured before and after the intervention. The collected data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests, paired samples t-tests, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with SPSS Statistics 28.0. The results of this study were as follows. First, the experimental group showed significant improvements in overall self-regulation as well as in its two subfactors: promotion-focused self-regulation and prevention-focused self-regulation. Second, the level of smartphone overdependence in the experimental group significantly decreased after participation in the psychomotorik activities. Third, the results of ANCOVA, controlling for pretest scores, revealed statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups in both self-regulation and smartphone overdependence, confirming the effectiveness of the psychomotorik activity program. The findings suggest that psychomotorik activities can contribute positively to enhancing self-regulation and reducing smartphone overdependence among middle school students at risk of smartphone overdependence. Furthermore, this study confirmed that psychomotorik activities can be utilized as an educational intervention applicable in school settings. Therefore, psychomotorik activities may serve as an effective educational approach for promoting healthy smartphone use habits and alleviating smartphone overdependence among adolescents.
