Using a sample from the Korean Education & Employment Panel(KEEP), this study attempts to
explore the effects of family disruption on academic achievement. The results show considerable
advantage favoring children from intact families over children living with a single mother. There also
exists a statistically insignificant advantage favoring children from intact families over children from
father-only families. With respect to the differing effect of the cause of family disruption, children
from divorced families do as well on average as children with a bereaved background with similar
observable characteristics. The length of time children lived with a single parent is also important,
and this study proves that those children who have been exposed to single parenthood 4 to 6 years
      suffer most academically.
In the meantime, a child's gender makes a difference in the effects of family disruption on
academic achievement. For boys, either living with a single mother or parental loss through divorce
exerts a statistically significant negative effect on achievement. In addition, the negative yearly effect
of family disruption does not diminish over time. For girls, however, little unfavorable effect of
family disruption is witnessed. It could thus be said that boys face greater adjustment problems than
girls, rendering a marked gender distinction in the effects of family disruption in Korea.
