This project aims to develop a young adult literature (YAL) reading program for secondary students in English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts. The present project was motivated by the realization that regular English reading classes in Korea, which tend to be test-oriented and textbook-based, rarely offer students positive reading experiences. To solve this problem, the project seeks to develop a supplementary reading program that will enhance students’ interest and confidence in reading in English, as well as their reading skills. To accomplish this aim, a needs analysis was conducted employing two questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that Korean secondary school teachers and students perceived the benefits of reading English novels; nevertheless, using English novels was still considered challenging for both teachers and students. Respondents agreed that an effective English novel reading program was needed in public secondary schools. Based on the findings from the needs analysis, a reading curriculum incorporating YAL and reader-response theory-inspired activities was developed. Sample lesson plans and materials were developed, incorporating theoretical and research findings as well as implications from the needs analysis and curricula evaluation results. The proposed curriculum was then reviewed and revised based on reviewer feedback. It is anticipated that this program will help EFL secondary students to develop reading proficiency and a valuable English reading habit.
